As much as we’ve enjoyed cooking some great dinners this past year, the desserts that have come afterwards have, of course, been even sweeter. We’ve had plenty of celebrations and holidays to bake for but we’ve also found a few moments to churn out cookies, brownies, or a cake just because. Here are our favorite desserts we baked this year.

Some nights you just need the comfort of a warm cookie without a bunch of scooping and baking. I made this once for a dinner party too, served with pillows of whipped cream, and almost every guest asked for the recipe. It’s deceptively delicious considering how easy it is to make and bake. —Meghan Splawn, Associate Food Editor

If you grew up eating Entenmann’s cheese danish as I did, you’re also probably filled with fond memories of that cream cheese filling. Don’t let the yeast dough scare you off in this recipe — your efforts will be well rewarded and you’ll never buy one of those long rectangular boxes from the grocery store again. —Tracey Gertler, Production Assistant

This is hands-down my favorite brownie recipe! I’ve made them enough times in the past year that I now have the recipe committed to memory. In full disclosure, you’ll dirty several bowls in the process, but as someone who hates washing dishes, I’m here to tell you that the rich flavor and fudgy texture are worth it every time. Plus the recipe calls for just a handful of pantry basics and is a breeze to pull off. —Kelli Foster, Associate Food Editor

I’m usually a chocolate person, but this dessert is an exception: I’m all about this lemon cake. It’s bright and not too sweet. —Ariel Knutson, News & Culture Editor

I wanted to try making these after watching Great British Bake Off and made them twice in one week after realizing how delicious they are. It’s such a fun recipe that’s very rewarding once it’s complete. —Kaitlin Garske, Senior Social Media Editor

Normally I’m pretty disciplined when it comes to desserts, but it was almost impossible to stop at just one the first time I tried these tangy cranberry curd bars. They’re just as delicious as they are gorgeous, which is the best kind of treat. —Grace Elkus, Senior Food Editor

Any baked good recipe that starts with a box of cake mix is a winner in my book. I’m obsessed with these pumpkin cookies (which get super fluffy, thanks to yellow cake mix). To top it off, the cream cheese frosting is the icing on the … cookie. —Lauren Masur, Staff Writer

You don’t have to be gluten-free (I am not!) to fall in love with this cake. A mix of polenta and almond flour not only make for a ridiculously moist crumb, but also lend a really nice, rustic texture. Pro tip: Leftovers are great for breakfast with a dollop of yogurt. —Sheela Prakash, Assistant Food Editor
