Elton John’s New “Treehouse” Condo Has a Futuristic Kitchen Fit for the Rocket Man Himself
Growing up in Y2K suburbia, peak real estate luxury to me was MTV Cribs. I distinctly remember watching Sir Elton John tour one of his palatial estates, and being completely awed by the concept of such an old home bursting with character. Well, Sir John has added another property to his collection, and this time, it’s a condo so new it’s still being built in the heart of downtown Toronto.
Why add a Canadian property to his real estate portfolio? John’s longtime partner David Furnish is Canadian-born, and the couple and their children spend summers in the area visiting family. With John winding down his concert tour, they decided the time was right to purchase a place of their own.
I was surprised to see the powerhouse couple decide on a condo. To me, condominium doesn’t exactly evoke “legendary pop icon,” but rather a much smaller space. But this 2,600-foot space is anything but builder basic. Yes, the King Toronto complex includes amenities like yoga, retail, and event spaces (perhaps one day a piano bar?), but the design is what sets it apart. Danish architect Bjarke Ingels pulled inspiration from around the world to create a work of art unlike anything else. Incorporating expansive windows, glass blocks, and plenty of greenery, the futuristic complex looks fit for the Rocket Man himself.
Each of the six penthouses in the plan is designed around a specific theme. Perched atop the complex, they are built to feel like its habitants are living on top of a mountain at the heart of a city. As a city girl who really likes the idea of the outdoors, I am absolutely enamored. John and Furnish must be similarly taken with the concept as they purchased the penthouse named “The Treehouse.”
The west-facing space is filled with white oak, brass accents, and huge windows. A stunning curved staircase that connects the two floors serves as a gorgeous focal point, while being mirrored on the main floor by a mature tree housed in a two-story atrium. The open concept main floor includes a living area, dining space, and kitchen that radiate around the tree.
While not necessarily expansive, the kitchen is about as glam as can be. Paneled completely in soft brass, the metal is modern and sleek while still reflecting warm light from the surrounding windows. An island anchors the space and looks over the dining table, inviting the family and guests to mingle together. And if they crave more of the outdoors than a gorgeous tree in the center of their home, they can simply step outside to one of the four terraces lush with gorgeous greenery and watch the sun set over the city.
Although this fit-for-royalty housing plan isn’t quite open for purchase, if you’re in the market to take a luxury home off the market, rapper Lil Wayne put his lush Miami Beach home up for sale recently and it’s definitely worth checking out.
