If you’ve ever set out to make a drip cake, but ended up with a runny mess, then you’re not alone. For those just getting started, making a great drip cake is a challenge! Videos and tutorials on social media may make it look like a simple task, but it takes some practice.

If you’re up for trying out the drip cake again, but want more successful results, look to this simple yet clever tip for making one — without any of the added mess. If you know you’re drizzle is the right consistency and your cake is totally level, then here’s the one thing you should be doing before starting your drip: Freeze your cake before drizzling with the drip. Then, immediately put the cake back in the freezer for about 15 minutes to let the drip set.

This ingenious tip comes from TikTok user Whitney (aka @theblondewhobakes), whose entire feed is dedicated to showcasing helpful baking hacks and simple recipes.

In the video, Whitney demonstrates how she gets perfect drips on the edges of all of her drip cakes. It may seem super simple, but freezing the cake ahead of time helps to make sure that the drips aren’t too loose and that they don’t run too far down the side of the cake.

It’s already difficult enough to make sure the drip is the perfect consistency, so making sure the drip doesn’t just end up as a puddle at the bottom of the cake stand will make sure your next baking project is a cinch!
