As we beeline for true winter and all the fun holiday activities and gatherings ahead, well, it’s no secret that the healthy, balanced meals of just last month suddenly take a back seat. Those summer salads and grain bowls clear the stage for the decadent, hearty, homey dishes that make this time of year that much cozier. I’m talking about slow-cooked roasts, savory tarts, scalloped potatoes, succulent soufflés — not to mention all the delicious desserts. (You’re not alone if the color green seems to have suddenly disappeared from your dinner plate.) In fact, I think you’ll find that we here at Kitchn have also been prioritizing cheesy, buttery, cream-filled goodness over, well, everything else.

But, there does come a time in all the indulging when one craves something fresh, bright, and green. Luckily, we stumbled across a handy little gadget that makes upping our veggie intake pretty much effortless. It’s the kind of kitchen essential that legitimizes your previous gripes by proving its efficiency and all-around awesomeness. Ready for the big reveal? Meet the Dreamfarm Spina In-Sink Salad Spinner.

How does it work? Well, the must-have gadget functions as a normal colander with a long handle that makes for an easy grip. Once you’ve loaded the basket with the salad (or veggies/fruits) of your choice, just give it a quick rinse and — this is where the magic comes in — twist the handle to move it to the upright position, balance the non-slip bottom of the bowl inside your sink, and pump as you would a normal salad spinner. As you continually push down on the handle the basket will spin, launching streams of excess water out to the walls of your sink. Easy!

The dual-use tool is made of BPA-free plastic that can also withstand heat. So, if you plan on using the Spina to strain boiled veggies, rice, or pasta, you won’t have to worry about it melting. Not only does this Dreamfarm innovation combine two kitchen essentials in one, it’s also bound to free up loads of cabinet room. Traditional salad spinners are so big and cumbersome, chances are that with the recovered space, you’ll be able to store a set of stackable cookware, meal-prep must-haves, or a new Dutch oven.

We can’t think of an easier way to get in our greens. Having a tool like this at the ready is totally game-changing in the holiday season. With so many other cooking projects all happening at once, being able to quickly rinse and spin salad without taking out a multi-piece, hard-to-clean spinner makes all the difference.
