While most of us venture to the farmers market in search of seasonal fruits and veggies, or perhaps farm-fresh eggs and milk, you might be overlooking some good buys beyond those weekly staples.

Selections vary from location to location, but in general, farmers markets are also a good place to pick up some interesting snacks — everything from everyday munchies, to something a little more special you can use for your dinner party or as a hostess gift.

Go beyond produce and dairy, and consider picking up one of these snacks on your next trip to the farmers market.

1. Homemade Pretzels

I’ve been noticing pretzels pop up at more and more farmers markets, and I’m always happy to take a bag home with me. These pretzels just feel a little more special, and are a fun alternative to your go-to brand at the grocery store.

2. Granola

Not only is local granola a welcome addition to the breakfast table, but it also comes in handy as a tasty snack to munch on throughout the day.

3. Cheese

At some of the stalls selling milk and eggs, you’re also likely to encounter cheese. Good cheese! These locally produced cheeses are always fun to pick up (especially if you’re having a dinner party) since they’re not something you’d come across in the grocery store.

4. Candy

I’m not talking about a regular chocolate bar. Oh, no — candy found at the farmers market is so much more than that. It’s an extra-special treat, usually in the form of sweet maple candy and fudge.

5. Baked Goods

From muffins and scones to cinnamon rolls, cookies, crumb bars, pies, and more, the farmers market is just as good — and many times even better — than going to the bakery. There’s plenty to choose from when it comes to finding something to satisfy your sweet tooth.
