We Tested 4 Famous Rice Krispies Treat Recipes and Found the Only One You’ll Ever Need

When I was growing up in the South, I intuitively understood the urge to fry things. Southerners fry almost everything — from classics like fried chicken and fried pork chops to fried vegetables like mushrooms and Brussels sprouts. But the thing people might not know is that our love for fried food is not limited to just that of savory taste — it also extends to sweet snacks like fried Oreos and fried Twinkies, too.

As a native of the South, I truly thought I’d seen it all until I came across Bay Area food enthusiast @dudewheresmytacos‘s recipe video for deep-fried Rice Krispies Treats. Yes, you read that right: Deep-fried Rice Krispies Treats. The sweet marshmallow treat I grew up loving to eat is now getting fried, and I’m not mad about it.

You’ll start with the most crucial part of any fried snack: the batter. As like the Northern California content creator shows in the video, I find that for treats like Oreos and Twinkies, pancake batter works the best. While you can use any pancake mix, the creator opts to use the Pearl Milling Company brand.

Make your batter according the instructions on the box. Next, take store-bought or, if you have the extra time, homemade Rice Krispies Treats and dip them into the batter. When you’re ready, fry the coated Rice Krispies Treats in vegetable oil until golden-brown. Then, transfer them to a plate, top the crispy treat with a chocolate or caramel drizzle, and enjoy.

Summer may be all about homemade s’mores and more, but this year I’m heating things up with this showstopping recipe.
