If your morning routine often starts with a bagel smeared with cream cheese and topped with thinly sliced red onions, briny capers, and delicious lox, then you may want to reach for something else. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a major retailer just announced a recall of smoked salmon

Here’s what we know: On October 22, 2024, Acme Smoked Fish Corp., a national fish purveyor, announced a voluntary recall. The company sent a letter to possibly affected Costco customers detailing the potential contamination of its Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon with Listeria monocytogenes

According to the statement, all affected packages have the lot number 8512801270 plastered on the front.

According to an FDA statement, the potentially contaminated fish was only distributed to certain Costco stores in Florida between October 9, 2024, and October 13, 2024. However, Acme Smoked Fish Corp is a popular retailer, and its smoked salmon products fill the shelves of grocers like Whole Foods, Wegmans, Amazon Fresh, and Walmart.

Acme Smoked Fish Corp. has not provided any details on how its Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon may have become contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that this bacteria has been appearing in various foods recently.

Listeria monocytogenes can spread in multiple ways, including through affected foods coming into contact with each other, surviving on processing equipment, and thriving in cold environments like refrigerators.

To stay safe, the company urges people to immediately check their refrigerators for potentially spoiled packs of smoked salmon. So far, no reported illnesses have been linked to these products, and searching your kitchen is your only defense to keep it that way.

Listeria can be serious. According to the CDC if you are affected you may suffer from side effects like fever, headache, stiff neck, fatigue, loss of balance, diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, and serious illness in pregnant women.

So if you’ve visited any of the Costco stores called out in this recall to get your hands on some smoked salmon lately, it’s recommended that you toss out that salmon immediately. You cannot see, smell, or taste Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, so avoiding eating it is the only way to stay safe.
