It’s no secret how much I love Costco. (I didn’t become Kitchn’s in-house Costco expert by not shopping there!) It’s where I go for both big-ticket items, like TVs and prescription eyewear, and everyday staples. Milk, eggs, and toilet paper are permanently inked on my shopping list. As is cereal, which is what we’re here to talk about today!

While a neighborhood grocer sells dozens of varieties of dry cereal, including big brands, boutique buys, and private labels, Costco curates its cereal choices before they hit the shelves. Still, there’s nearly an entire aisle devoted to the morning meal. After taste-testing all of the cereals at my local Costco, I’ve found the very best one to buy. If you buy just one cereal from Costco, let it be Morning Summit.

Morning Summit Cereal, $13.49 for 38 ounces

This cereal is everything I want to start (or end) the day with. It’s packed with whole almonds, dried cherries and cranberries, pumpkin seeds, granola clusters, and crunchy flakes. The mix of ingredients results in the most delightful marriage of hearty flake cereal and satisfying granola. Some granolas can be cloyingly sweet, leaning on sweeteners to give structure to the clusters; this cereal strikes a better balance. It tastes like a not-too-sweet granola, but it’s actually a cereal!

With the variety of texture and flavor from the combination of nuts, seeds, and fruit, there’s no wrong way to eat this cereal. You’ll find me serving spoonfuls atop Greek yogurt in the mornings. It’s also great with milk, as a topper for ice cream, layered on bubbling oven-baked fruit, and for snacking straight out of the box. While I love Morning Summit so much, it’s even better knowing I’m getting a great deal; at other stores you’ll pay $0.71 per ounce, but at Costco this cereal is just $0.36 per ounce. How’s that for a good way to start the day?
