These Are the Best Costco Groceries to Pick Up for the 4th of July

The only subject that has ever held my attention has been food, because there’s no end to what you can taste, smell, learn, and cook. I patchworked my way to recipe development and food writing by earning degrees in Family & Consumer Sciences (you may have known it as Home Ec) and Food, Nutrition, and Culinary Science, and working anywhere that would take me: university food services, local bakeries, and the set of Good Eats on Food Network. Early on, I asked my mom how she knew what a cookbook recipe (with no pictures) would look and taste like. While my mom was there to teach me, I realized that not everyone has someone to turn to for trusted cooking guidance. I try every day to be that person for The Kitchn’s readers by sharing smart recipes they can feel proud to serve. Recipe development is the most fun job I can imagine, but it also comes with a lot of dirty dishes and hours spent in the grocery store. I’ve found that I actually really love grocery shopping — especially at Costco and Aldi — and it brings me such joy to share my finds with The Kitchn readers.

So now that we’ve almost reached the midpoint of summer, let Costco be your one-stop shop for all of your Fourth of July needs. Whether you’re headed to your patio this weekend or just your kitchen, Costco has got you covered.

1. Martin’s Potato Sandwich Rolls, $5.99 for 16

Don’t settle for store-brand buns this Fourth of July. Martin’s Potato rolls are soft, buttery, and the perfect contrast to grilled burgers and dogs. (There’s a reason Shake Shack uses these buns!)

2. New York Strip Steak, $13.99 per pound

A smaller crowd at this year’s Fourth festivities might just pave the way for steak to make it as a main. Salt the steaks early, then place them over fiery coals for the perfect grill-marked crust surrounding rosy medium-rare meat.

3. SweetWater Variety Pack, $29.99 for 26 cans

Did you know that Costco carries local beer in bulk? There’s no better way to celebrate the Fourth than by supporting businesses in your neighborhood. My Costco in Georgia has beer from SweetWater Brewing Company in stock, but your warehouse may carry different smaller-scale brews. Check them out!

4. Mac and Cheese, $2.99 per pound

Forget macaroni salad — I vote for mac and cheese as a cookout side. Slide this pan into in the oven for ease, or transfer it to your own dish before heating. Nobody will guess this mac wasn’t homemade!

5. Beyond Meat Beyond Burger, $11.99 for 8

An easy way to make sure everyone is well-fed is to always have Beyond Meat burgers on hand. This way, you’ll have an option to offer your socially distant neighbors who prefer a plant-based patty.

6. Cowboy Hardwood Lump Charcoal, $20.89 for 34 pounds

No griller wants to step up to get started, only to realize that there are just a few measly crumbs in the bottom of the charcoal bag. Head to Costco for some hardwood lump charcoal and you’ll be set to fire up the grill for the rest of the summer.
