Starting Monday, You Must Wear a Face Mask When Shopping at Costco
Costco announced yesterday on their website that starting on Monday, May 4, all shoppers need to wear a face mask when inside the store. “Members and guests must wear a mask or face covering that covers the mouth and nose at all times while at Costco,” the announcement explains. Just like CDC guidelines, however, this rule does not impact children who are under the age of 2 or for those who have certain medical conditions that prohibit them from wearing a mask.
“This change is for your safety and the safety of our employees and other members, and to further assist with our social distancing efforts. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding,” Costco explains on their site. The face masks are not a substitute for social distancing — shoppers must still try and keep a six-foot distance from other shoppers when in the store.
Costco also announced new shopping hours for people over the ago of 60 at select warehouses. Starting Monday, May 4, people over the age of 60 and people with disabilities can shop between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. — anyone younger will not be let inside. Guests will also not be permitted at those times.
Take this as a sign: If you haven’t already been wearing a face mask when you go outside, especially to enclosed places like grocery stores, now is definitely the time. It’s not just Costco that has implemented this new rule — many states require masks when out in public. As the CDC has explained, wearing a face mask helps protect the people around you if you’re asymptomatic. Let’s continue to flatten the curve!
