As a dedicated Costco shopper, there is rarely a week that passes without a visit to the warehouse. It is my go-to store for stocking up on staples, doing my special-occasion shopping, and putting together affordable lunches. There is always something new on display (or for sampling), but this month I am leaning into long-time favorites that keep my kitchen running. Dave’s Killer Bread 21 Whole Grain and Seeds Bread is one of those, and it is so much more than a simple loaf of sliced bread.

What’s So Great About Dave’s Killer Bread 21 Whole Grain and Seeds Bread?

Dave’s Killer Bread has been a favorite of Kitchn editors for years, making our list of the essential groceries for three years straight. The bread is cut into hearty slices and studded with a variety of whole grains and seeds: sunflower, flax, pumpkin, barley, and more. We’ve found a pretty convincing dupe for this bread at another one of our favorite stores, but love to support Dave’s Killer Bread’s mission of Second Chance Employment by buying the name brand when we can. Luckily, we can get a two-pack of this bread at Costco for less than nine dollars, so one goes in the bread box for this week while the other is stashed in the freezer for next.

What’s the Best Way to Eat Dave’s Killer Bread 21 Whole Grain and Seeds Bread?

The best sandwiches start with really great bread. The seedy, nutty texture of these slices pair perfectly with stacks of veggies on this California sammie. I also love it when it’s served toasted and stuffed with shredded Brussels sprouts and cheese, or peanut butter and marshmallow fluff. The hearty slices can also be diced or torn, then toasted in a skillet with butter or oil to make croutons for soups and salads.

Don’t forget that mornings are a great time for toast too. Spread mashed avocado on top of a slice, then top with grated egg or cheese and roasted corn kernels. Add a schmear of cream cheese or Nutella, and top with sliced bananas or strawberries. Lately I’ve been making a toasted slice of Dave’s Killer Bread with almond butter, sliced almonds, and a drizzle of honey for my mid-morning snack.

Find it in stores: Dave’s Killer Bread 21 Whole Grain and Seeds Bread, $8.69 for 2 (27-ounce) loaves
