The $8 Costco Find That Will Totally Elevate Soup Season

After 10 years of being a loyal Costco member, I still feel a thrill when I walk into the warehouse each week. And that’s a good thing because I work the Costco beat for Kitchn, bringing you my picks for the best items to buy in bulk each month. With the holiday season in the rearview and dark, cold days of winter ahead, I was singularly focused on filling my oversized cart with items that would bring warmth and comfort to my kitchen. Surprisingly, I found exactly what I was looking for — in Costco’s freezer section.

While there’s room for a healthy debate around whether to use the slow cooker, Instant Pot, or your trusty Dutch oven to make a batch of soup, no soup (or stew!) is complete without a roll for dipping. Sister Shubert’s rolls are some of the best around. Slide a pan of frozen rolls into the oven, and within 10 minutes your kitchen will fill with the warm, yeasty aroma of freshly baked bread. Break open the crusty, golden exterior to expose pillowy-soft bread and add a pat of softened butter to amp up the delicious flavor.

These rolls pair well with way more than soup. Slice them in half and stack with layers of meat and cheese for easy slider suppers. Cut leftover rolls into cubes and make cheesy, peppery stovetop croutons to serve atop a wintery kale salad. Don’t sleep on serving the rolls for breakfast, either. Tear them to pieces and add eggs, nutty Gruyère cheese, and pancetta for a comforting make-ahead brunch. Now that I think about it, I may need to pick up two bags of Sister’s rolls.
