There’s nothing more frustrating than making the journey to Costco, only to find out that the one item you’re looking for isn’t even on the shelf. Even though the website says you can order it online, there isn’t a specific way to know if that item is in your local store — especially if you need to grab something specific that day. Thankfully Costco understands this frustration, which is why the store just made an update to its app that will immediately solve this problem.

After Costco’s last update to their app (Version 24.6.3) in June, the warehouse now makes it easy for shoppers to check the app and see if there are certain items that are on shelves at their local warehouse. Simply look up the item in the app, and it will tell you if it’s in the store or sold out; this will save you the hassle of making a trip, only to leave empty-handed.

To access this feature, open the app and go to the warehouse tab. This particular section of the app will have a redesign “with a new Inventory on Hand search feature, allowing members to search for inventory of products at the warehouse,” according to Costco’s update.

While this could completely alter the way you shop (as in, will help you be an even more productive shopper), Costco fans are already skeptical that this app update will be accurate to what’s actually in their stores — especially when other major retailers also have this feature in their app, yet the data never seems to be accurate.

“Target and Walmart consistently let me down on this front. It’s going to be just the same,” writes one Costco shopper on Reddit.

“As someone who’s done inventory at multiple warehouses, I can assure you that not even the in-store item counts are accurate. Much less the app,” says another.

Shoppers are also claiming that they aren’t seeing this particular update in the app quite yet as it rolls out to the masses. We’ll have to see if this particular feature in the Costco app will actually benefit shoppers, or cause even more of a headache.
