Corner Stores: What’s Your Favorite Food Find?
If you live in a big city, chances are there’s a corner store nearby (or maybe you call it a bodega). These stores carry the requisite junk food, soda, newspapers and lottery tickets, but there are usually a few unexpected food items, as well. Sometimes enough to make a whole dish, or even a meal.
Our corner store, wonderfully named Happy Food Spot (on Lincoln Ave. in Chicago), has saved us countless times when we forget an ingredient at the grocery store.
We’ve also been known to wake up on a lazy weekend morning, craving a homemade breakfast and, finding our fridge woefully understocked, head over to grab ingredients for the whole meal (chilaquiles, anyone?).
Happy Food Spot carries a mix of global ingredients and specialty products that we enjoy sampling. Looking for fruit preserves from Switzerland, Ireland or Germany? They’ve got them. Mole sauce or masa harina for a batch of tamales? Check and check. And it’s reassuring to know that a jar of Nutella is never more than a short walk away. You never know when you might need one.
So, tell us, what’s your favorite corner store food find?
