Other highlights: A raw diet isn’t going to be for everyone. Gena Hamshaw gets that. But that doesn’t meant that there’s not a place for raw foods in everyone’s diet! In Choosing Raw, Gena gives us an entry point into eating raw foods. If you’re curious about them, if you’re skeptical, if you’re ready to embrace raw foods but not sure where to start — wherever you’re coming from, this book is a place to start.

Nearly half the book is devoted to simply setting you up. Gena explains why you might want to consider raw and vegan foods as part of — or all of — your diet, how to balance nutrition with enjoyment, and stocking your kitchen with all the ingredients and tools you need to get started.

The second half of the book is all about the recipes. You’ll quickly see that Gena is comfortable with a bit of cooking — not everything needs to be raw! In both these recipes and in her writing, she encourages a balance between purely raw foods and vegan foods. Having a dehydrator would be a plus for many of these recipes; Gena uses one for gently cooking things like crackers, kale chips, and eggplant “bacon.”
