How many minutes (hours?!) of your life do you think you’ve wasted trying to corral all your food storage containers and their miscellaneous lids? Or trying to match lids that don’t have bottoms and bottoms that don’t have lids? It’s a small problem, but it’s also one of the most frustrating: The right lid to the right food storage container should be easily accessible, something you can grab with one hand without thinking about it. You shouldn’t have to take everything out of a cabinet to play multiple rounds of the not-so-fun game of “Is this the lid I need?”

So, how should you store them in a way that makes sense and works for you? We’ve got a few ideas. Here are three of the most brilliant ways to take the chaos out of your kitchen’s biggest mess.

1. Use an office organizer.

Think outside the box, or rather, look outside the kitchen, and consider one of those file holders/mail organizers that you typically see in an office. Hang it inside your cabinet with removable Command Hooks. Then, simply slip your storage container lids inside, with the bigger lids toward the back, so you can see everything you’ve got at a glance.

2. Convert a cereal box.

Storing your lids vertically is one of the best ways to make sure you can see what you have and easily grab what you need. This storage solution involves creating a magazine holder-style container out of an empty cereal box. (A smart solution that doesn’t require buying a single extra thing!) If you don’t like the look of the cereal box, consider covering it with pretty wrapping paper. Either way, your food storage lids will be whipped into shape with just a little resourcefulness.

3. Hack a cooling rack.

Is there an organizing solution more satisfying than one that involves a storage hack and the dollar store? If you said no, then this storage container lid storage solution is for you. Set a cooling rack over a shallow plastic container and set your lids between the rungs. Each lid is on display and easy to grab. You can slip the whole thing in a drawer or on a shelf in a cabinet, making this storage solution versatile as well as functional.
