Earlier this month we gave you a sneak peek into some of our favorite chef kitchens, and this week we’re giving some of our favorite cookbook authors the same treatment. What’s most impressive to us about so many of these kitchens is that the authors, like Joy the Baker and Anna Watson Carl of The Yellow Table, not only develop their recipes in their home kitchens, but many of them also style and photograph the food for their books right there. Talk about a multitasking space!

Paule Caillat is a French cook extraordinaire, very skillful and talented, and generous with her cooking experience. She teaches cooking classes and leads market tours in Paris, and I was lucky enough to join one last week. The food was fabulous, the markets a treat. But her kitchen was what truly took my breath away. Here’s a peek inside Paule’s Marais district kitchen, and a taste or two of what we cooked that afternoon.

Scott renovated his kitchen entirely on his own, figuring it out as he went along. You’d never guess it from spending time in this delightfully bright space, a classic with a modern twist. He’s certainly made the most of this funky layout with the use of strategically placed pantries and a keen sense of organization. Scott is also one of the most inventive cake makers I’ve ever met.

We love the look of rich, gleaming wood in the kitchen. When it’s done well, as it is in this renovated Arts and Crafts kitchen, it feels so warm and inviting. There are a few other things about this kitchen, too, that caught us. The owner, architect John Clagett, made some unusual design choices that really seem to work.This article at PointClickHome is really worth a read.

We are preparing to move to a new apartment, and although we have been known for having a colorful kitchen, our plans for the new space are quite different. Perhaps it’s symbolic of the fresh start, or maybe we’re inspired by the sunny windows in our new kitchen, but we keep imagining bright white walls with warm wood countertops, shelves, or other details. This colorful Los Angeles home is what dreams are made of.

Forgoing conventional living arrangements in favor of life on the road in an RV requires a hefty dose of romanticism, and it takes a special sort of someone to really do it right. In this particular case, the special someone(s) are Elyse DeLisle and Amanda Goelz, a creative couple who just last year decided to scrap plans to close on a condo in Florida and instead travel the country in a renovated 1986 Fleetwood Avion that they found on Craigslist.

Back in the early spring of 2016 I tore down a little house my family had purchased 18 years earlier and, taking it on as finally my own and with money that I inherited when my father passed away, I rebuilt it from the ground up (actually below the ground, up) with the help of three wonderfully skilled people, John Berg (architect), Peter Germano (contractor) and Rebecca Robertson (interior designer). The project took nearly two years, allowing me to move in by Christmas 2018.

A few weeks ago, I got to go to France to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Staub factory. (I swear this is not a humblebrag!) I was there to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the cocotte and the launch of the new Staub cookbook. I love seeing how stuff gets made — especially stuff that I actually use on an almost-daily basis. And I’m hoping you guys do, too, because I took a bunch of pictures and detailed notes to share the process with you.
