Recipe: Spring Turnip Soup with Garlic Chickpea Croutons
Ahh, springtime. You know it’s springtime in the Pacific Northwest when you need to change your clothes multiple times a day. Winter hat and gloves in the morning — yep. T-shirts and plenty of sunscreen to get through the afternoon — for sure. Rain boots and a rain coat around 4 pm — definitely. Springtime on our farm is an exciting time of the year even if the weather is all over the place.

Recipe: Leek, Potato & Fennel Soup with Bacon
This soup is comfort in a bowl. I love serving it with chunks of buttered rustic bread as an easy supper. Thick, creamy, and fragrant — with the deliciously salty crunch of bacon — this unusual leek, potato, and fennel soup is equally at home at an everyday dinner or an elegant dinner party. We had an unusually huge harvest of leeks this year, along with a whole bunch of potatoes, and I was scrambling to make sure everything got used up.

Here’s How We Hosted a January Soup Swap
This week I’ve been sharing the story of the soup swap party I threw with my friend Tricia. I shared the party plan, and then some details on what you need to host a soup swap yourself (honestly, it’s the easiest sort of party!). Today I’m sharing our own soup swap and how it went. Here’s who we invited, what we served, and the soups the swappers brought! Tricia and I put our heads together on this party and decided to keep it simple.

4 Free Printables to Help You Host a Soup Swap
This week we’ve been sharing our January Soup Swap — the first Gathering from The Kitchn of 2015. A soup swap is a very practical sort of party, bringing friends old and new together to share soup. A soup swap does, though, take a bit of coordination and explanation, and we found that having name tags, soup labels, and a few other printed pieces was really helpful. We designed a set of printables and they’re free to you.

Recipe: Yotam Ottolenghi’s Legume (Noodle) Soup
One of the most important qualities of a great lunch is its appeal at the midday hour, when you’re tempted to go out with colleagues or eat at that new burger stand instead of reaching for the container waiting for you in the office fridge. We’re exploring five great recipes this week from Yotam Ottolenghi’s cookbooks, and part of what makes them so good is exactly this appeal. If I make a recipe from an Ottolenghi book, I really can’t wait to eat it at lunch.

Recipe: Alice Waters’ Chickpea and Broccoli Rabe Soup
Last summer, by absolute luck, I scored a last-minute reservation at Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse Cafe in Berkley, California. It was during the height of the busy graduation season, and the chances of booking a table on the day of the request was highly unlikely. But it happened, and I was ushered into the cafe to a table near the window and proceeded to order nearly everything on the menu.

Recipe: Slow-Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup
Chicken soup is one of my favorite things to make in the slow cooker. As long as you use dark meat, the chicken never overcooks during the long cooking time, and making a big batch means that you can have it for dinner and stock the freezer at the same time. This Tex-Mex version has fire-roasted tomatoes, carrots, and black beans in a lightly spiced broth, and hits all the notes when you need a bright-yet-warming meal.

10 Summer Soups to Eat on a Rainy Day
If every summer day was sunny, the only foods you’d crave would be cool, crisp salads and anything off the grill — but rainy summer days happen. When they do, the mood changes. Suddenly, your usual seasonal favorites won’t hit the spot. Instead, it feels a little more like soup weather — not the heavy, hearty soups you turn to in winter, but lighter, summer-appropriate soups that make you feel just the right kind of cozy for the season. Here are 10 of our favorites.

10 Ingredients That Will Make Any Vegetarian Chili Taste Amazing
During my stint as a vegetarian, bean-laden, meat-free chili was one of the dishes I turned to most. While I loved it because it was hearty and comforting, I’ll be the first to admit that it never tasted as good as traditional chili, no matter how hard I tried to get it there. The meat in traditional chili lends flavor that’s hard to find in beans and veggies.

Pasta e fagioli translates to “pasta and beans,” but that doesn’t even begin to describe all the flavorful elements of this humble, comforting dish. Tender pinto beans cook all day, resulting in a rich and creamy broth, and vibrant tomatoes, pancetta, and herbs are added to round out the sophisticated Italian meal. Here, we use the slow cooker to pull this soup together, making it a hands-off dinner you can eat tonight and enjoy all week.

Recipe: Copycat Olive Garden Chicken Gnocchi Soup
You might adore Olive Garden for the unlimited salad and breadsticks or the ultra-comforting pastas, but for me, it’s all about the luxuriously creamy chicken gnocchi soup. Just thinking about it, I can smell the herb and black pepper-flecked broth and feel the warm, satisfying comfort it brings to my belly. But there’s one thing better than the chain’s iconic soup, and that’s how surprisingly easy it is to whip up at home.

Slow Cooker Hack: Add Canned Milk to Creamy Soups
If you’re craving comfort food, the slow cooker is a great place to turn. Among its many uses, churning out hearty soups and stews ranks high at the top. Luckily, there’s a $1 solution to the problem: a can of evaporated milk.

5 Tips for Thickening Slow Cooker Soups, Stews, and Sauces
Whether you celebrate Soup-tember or Crock-tober, fall is always officially soup season. Slow cookers that heat as low and slow, as their name implies, rely on heat that’s captured by their lid being in place. That means there is no evaporation happening, like with stovetop soups.
