This Slow-Cooker Chocolate Cake Has a Surprising Ingredient
You’ve heard of putting carrots in cake, but what about beets? This chocolate cake gets a double dose of beets — both in the cake itself and the whipped cream topping. The best part: it practically cooks itself in the slow cooker. This cake gets a lot of its moisture and sweetness from puréed cooked beets. You mix them with the standard cake essentials — butter, sugar, eggs, flour — and a bit of cocoa powder to create a rich, fudgy masterpiece.

Can I Use a Dutch Oven in Place of a Slow Cooker?
Q: Does a Dutch oven take the place of a slow cooker? I already own a slow cooker that I love and am looking at purchasing a Dutch oven, but I’m not sure if it makes sense to have both. Also, can I do stove to oven with an old coil burner stove, as I’m in a rental? Sent by Jennifer Editor: While these are two different types of cookware, Dutch ovens and slow cookers actually have a lot in common.

The 5 Safety Rules of Slow Cookers
I have been cooking meals in my slow cooker regularly for the past 18 years (and writing about it for the past seven!). It’s accurate to say that I love my slow cooker. 9 Things to Prep and Freeze for Easy Summer Meals
I don’t know about you, but the summer heat is starting to get to me. I’m a wimp, that’s for sure, but still — I’d rather sweat at the gym or on a hike than in my kitchen while making dinner. I’ll confess to leaning on snacky dinners and take-out when the temperature rises, but my favorite budget-friendly strategy is to have some freezer meals at the ready. Last month I worked up a freezer meal plan with some of my favorite summer recipes.

Recipe: Slow-Cooker Roast Beef Po’ Boys
Of all the delicious meals I have had the pleasure of eating in New Orleans, by far my favorite is a drippy, sloppy, saucy roast beef po’ boy. Perhaps lesser known than its fried seafood sibling, I much prefer the garlicky slow-cooked sandwich swimming in its own rich, roux-thickened gravy. The po’ boy (or poor boy, if you will) is the reigning king of New Orleans sandwiches.

Why Eva Katz Thinks You Should Ditch Your Slow Cooker and Buy a Pressure Cooker Instead
Who: Eva Katz of Cook’s Country and My Front Burner Where: Jamaica Plain in Boston, Massachusetts See her kitchen: Cook’s Country Editor Eva Katz’s Homey, Hardworking Kitchen When I visited Eva’s kitchen a few weeks ago, she was just about to make a batch of brown rice. But lo and behold, there was no rice cooker or saucepan in sight. Instead, she had pulled out her Fissler pressure cooker — a tool, I soon learned, that has totally changed her cooking.

I Rendered Lard in My Slow Cooker, and It Was Easy!
Rendering lard was one of those things I had on my list: big, complicated cooking projects I wanted to try. Months ago, one of my favorite farmers’ market vendors offered me a bag of pork fat. Who wouldn’t take a free bag of pork fat? He suggested that I try rendering it and I couldn’t wait to give it a try. So why did I leave it in the freezer for so long? I figured I would need a whole day.

Want to throw all of your ingredients into a pot, walk away, and return to a cheesy, piping hot dinner? Yep, me too. A slow cooker makes easy work of “baked” pasta, minus the bake. To be honest I’ve never really quite understood the whole slow cooker phenomenon.

Slow Cooker Recipe: Peppered Beef Shank in Red Wine
‘Tis the season for braises, slow-cooked meat that falls apart into tender chunks. Here’s a new favorite cut of meat for me: The inexpensive, incredibly delicious crosscut beef shank. The crosscut beef shank is basically just what it sounds (and looks) like: A crosscut piece of the animal’s leg. It’s full of tendons and muscle, and a chunk of bone. It doesn’t look very pretty, and if you tried to cook it fast, it would be tough and hard to chew.
