I’ll be the first to admit that my daily “lunch” usually consists of a wedge of Gouda and a handful of (oftentimes stale) crackers. Other days it includes a few slices of pie. But every now and then, when I want to feel like an actual grownup, I make a gussied-up sandwich that I may even sit down to eat. I am a firm believer in keeping plenty of basic ingredients on hand so I don’t get into trouble when I need to throw together a spontaneous meal.

I put the word dessert in the title of this recipe to make sure that this crisp, gooey temptation didn’t accidentally find its way into your lunch. Or dinner. This isn’t a meal. It’s not a snack. It’s really not for breakfast. Truly. I’m warning you. Just trying to do my duty. This is all dessert. Here’s what’s involved: Nutella (obviously). Cream cheese. A sprinkle of salt, and the best crusty Italian bread you can find, sliced as thin as you can.

Sometimes I ask my fiancé what he wants for dinner, sometimes I don’t. Typically I don’t, because his answer is always the same—Dragon Express. (Seriously, he would eat Chinese takeout over homemade cooking any day. I really wonder about him sometimes.) I made an exception last week by asking his culinary opinion, and he threw me a serious curveball. “Chicken Cordon Bleu!” he exclaimed.

Oh, we’ve been waiting for this for a while…Tomatoes finally showed up in our CSA this week, and we got straight to eating them. First it was a no-cook tomato sauce for dinner. Today, tomato sandwiches for lunch.This is how we make ours. Nothing fancy — no bacon or lettuce or even toasted bread. Just plain, white bread, lots of mayonnaise, salt, and pepper.
