The Breakfast Boat Is the Smarter, Better Breakfast Sandwich
Breakfast sandwiches can be stacked between a split roll or biscuit, stuffed into a pita, rolled into a burrito, even folded into a tidy closed quesadilla pocket, but as I recently learned, there’s one sandwich we’ve been neglecting for far too long: the breakfast boat. The breakfast boat is an egg-filled breakfast sandwich baked directly into a hollowed-out demi-baguette.

Recipe: Caprese Grilled Cheese
I wait all year to eat my weight in caprese salads during the summer. While I could easily make them through the year, they’re barely average with sub-par, out-of-season tomatoes. So it’s worth it to hold out until tomatoes peak and creamy, fresh mozzarella begs to join in on the fun. But eating caprese in its classic form is just one way to enjoy it — this twist on a grilled cheese just might rival the original.

How To Make the Best Tomato Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Grilled cheese with fresh tomato always seems like a really satisfying sandwich — until you sit down and eat one, that is. The problem is that melty cheese and wet tomatoes make for a very unstable sandwich. By making an open-faced grilled cheese and adding fresh tomatoes that have been patted dry, we can avoid many of the pitfalls that plague what should be a perfect pair. This sandwich is a little bit more involved than your classic grilled cheese.

Sliced in thick rounds and grilled or roasted, sweet potato is a hearty veggie burger substitute. The Ultimate Picnic Sandwich Is French, of Course
Pan bagna is a beloved sandwich in Provence. The warm breezes of the Côte d’Azur, the delicate sand, the crispy baguettes — a gentle rosé and a pan bagna are the makings of a magical picnic. Make These Ham & Cheese Croissant Sandwiches for Dinner Tonight

This Is the Frenchiest Thing You Can Make in Five Minutes
In addition to tucking into some macarons, my prerogative on Bastille Day is to watch Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, drink rosé, and make this five-minute dinner. How To Make a Sandwich for a Crowd
My dad was one of eight children, and his mother and father owned a general store and deli after escaping the New Jersey suburbs for a small town in Vermont, which is just to say — my grandmother knew how to make a big sandwich for a crowd. A Simple Upgrade for Your Summer Lobster Roll
My husband’s family has a little house on Southport Island, Maine. Every summer we trek to this beautiful, quiet oasis to unplug and relax — and eat lobster, of course. The classic lobster roll, however, leaves much to be desired; the sad, lifeless hotdog bun really ruins it for me every time. Enter: the garlic bread hoagie. While lobster roll purists may scoff at this idea, I think it’s rather ingenious.

The toast revolution doesn’t have to be for breakfast only, though — here’s one with creamy ricotta cheese, lemony peas, and crispy prosciutto!

Lessons from Kentucky’s Hot Brown: 5 Steps to a Better Sandwich
At (open) face value, the Hot Brown might seem too simplistic to be considered one of our nation’s most iconic sandwiches. Turkey, cheese, and bacon on white bread? What’s so special about that? Look more closely, though, and what might seem like a hot mess of leftovers from the fridge is actually quite ingenious. And the principles of a Hot Brown can be applied to make every sandwich you put together even better. Here’s how.

Recipe: Shrimp and Avocado Po’ Boys
Whenever I see a seafood po’ boy on a restaurant menu, I’m usually tempted to order it because I’m such a fan of the combination of crispy fried seafood, cool lettuce, and creamy mayo on a soft roll. Move Over, Sushi Burritos: Sushi Burgers Are Where It’s At
So far, the most “American” sushi I’ve seen featured BBQ sauce and chicken tenders. But this … this tops that. In terms of, you know, eatability, sushi burgers seem to be a lot less effective than sushi burritos. They’re not strong enough to pick up and eat like an actual burger, but I’m assuming that’s a testament to the chef’s respect for the integrity of the rice.

5 Rules of Airplane Snacks, According to a Flight Attendant
It’s true that you can actually get a good meal, maybe even a great one, with wine pairings to boot, on an airplane — that is, if you’re flying first class. Recipe: Vegetarian Biscuit and Gravy Sandwiches
Mushrooms duxelle is just a fancy French term that refers to sautéeing finely chopped mushrooms, onions, and herbs for a long time until they form a paste-like texture. Recipe: Collard Green Chicken Salad Wraps
I’ve always loved collard greens, but usually in a stewed, completely cooked-down form, with lots of broth flavored with smoky meat. But eating the greens raw never occurred to me until recently, when they were suggested as a sandwich bread substitute. Turns out they’re a great, light alternative when you’re looking for something other than bread. I always assumed raw collard greens would be tough, fibrous, and have an unpleasant vegetal taste.

It’s also true that Dan works in Manhattan, which is in fact an island with no shortage of great burgers.

The 3rd Step in Teaching My Kid to Cook: The Art of Grilled Cheese
My sons are smart. They figured out how to make grilled cheese sandwiches on their own, but they were discerning enough to notice the sandwiches made by their parents were far superior. I May Have Grown Up, But I’ll Never Grow Out of Peanut Butter and Jelly
Being a food editor, people have made a lot of assumptions about the way I eat. Specifically, when I made the transition to working mostly from home, there was the general thought that I must have really upped my lunch game. I used to laugh at the idea, but really, it depends how you look at it: I’m no longer buying questionable sandwiches from the corner deli, but I’m not cooking myself a fancy meal either.

Recipe: Salmon Burgers with Lime Mayonnaise
To keep these salmon burgers moist and tender, chop the salmon by hand rather than in the food processor. The salmon is easiest to chop when quite cold, as this makes the fish more firm and easier to cut. You can stick fresh salmon in the freezer for about 20 minutes — it won’t freeze, but it will firm up a bit. These may also be cooked on the grill.

You don’t have to be a vegetarian to love these hearty, flavorful meatless burgers. (You can, however, give them even more savory meatiness by adding chopped sautéed shiitake or cremini mushrooms to the mixture before forming the burgers). And by all means, make a double batch of the ketchup — you’ll find a million uses for it, and it keeps well in the refrigerator for a week.

A sweet, rich onion topping enhances the umami, or savory flavor, of these burgers. Look for 93% lean ground beef, which is enough fat to keep the burgers moist and tender, and lean enough to keep them healthy. Work the burgers as little as possible to prevent them from becoming dry. Form them into nice even patties that hold together, but try not to compact the meat too much. Also, indent the top with your thumb.

Recipe: Juicy Lucy Turkey Burgers
The Juicy Lucy — a thin burger with an oozing cheese filling — is beloved in Minneapolis, where two rival bars claim to have “invented” it. They are ideally suited to be made with lean ground turkey, because a Juicy Lucy is always served well-done. Just be sure to serve it with plenty of napkins! When using reduced-fat cheese, it is important to use a brand that melts well. My favorite is Kerrygold. Serve with classic condiments: ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise.

Why I Ditched Sandwich Bread for Collard Green Wraps
What started off as an accidental purchase — blindly grabbing a bunch of collard greens instead of kale — ended up completely changing the way I do lunch. And I’m not talking about salads. Instead, collard greens put an end to my days of relying solely on bread, wraps, or tortillas to make my lunch sandwiches. My intention was to buy a bunch of kale for smoothies, but in my whirlwind dash through the produce section, I came home with a bunch of collard greens instead.
