Recipe: Chairman Mao’s Red-Braised Pork Belly (Hong Shao Rou)
Red-colored meats are eaten for good luck because red is the color of fire, a symbol of good fortune and joy. “Red cooking” is a Chinese method of stewing or braising with both dark and light soy sauces and caramelized sugar; it imparts a red color to the prepared food. Despite its appearance, dark soy sauce is actually not as salty as the light variety, and it is often the soy sauce of choice for hearty dishes like stews that require added body and color.

Chopped Liver and Sweet Tea: Cooking Up Memories for Mom
I live in Seattle, but I am a New Yorker with roots in the Deep South — which is to say, I love pork and pastrami, mint juleps and Manischewitz, and chopped liver and sweet tea. The dearth of Jewish delis has affected me more than I thought it would, but I, at least, can find variations of my culinary desires, which tend to be pickles and matzo ball soup. For my mother, the situation is more dire; she longs for tongue and chopped liver, which are considerably more difficult to find.

5 DIY Treats for a Better Easter Basket
As a kid, I really lucked out with Easter baskets. Since my dad was a single parent, a family friend took on the responsibility of making one for me and my sister and she always nailed it. There were plastic eggs filled with pastel-colored M&Ms and more jelly beans than I knew what to do with, as well as less common treats, like chocolates from the local candy shop.

17 Tasty Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is a day for meat and potatoes if there ever was one. The traditional foods — corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, anything green — are some of our favorite comfort food dishes. And of course you can’t forget about the drinks! From a boozy shamrock shake to Guinness everything, it’s a day to eat, drink, and make merry. This delicious cabbage dish is a far cry from the wilted cabbage you’re used to seeing alongside corned beef.

5 Reasons Purim Is the Best Jewish Holiday
Even if you’re not Jewish, chances are you’re familiar with some of the major holidays. There’s the dynamic duo of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah — aka the High Holy Days — which skew on the serious side, and Hanukkah has become a big deal for even the non-observant (because: Christmas). But my favorite calendar day of the year is one you might not have heard of.

The Delightful Kitsch of Easter Lamb Cake
The comic essayist David Sedaris perfectly captures the absurdity of ritual in his famous French-class skit. Sedaris, an American, attempts to describe in broken French how “the rabbit of Easter … he bring of the chocolate … he come in the night when one sleep on a bed.” His Polish and Italian classmates scoff at the idea of a small, long-eared mammal that sneaks into children’s homes each spring to lavish them with sweets.

The Prettiest Way to Display Your Dyed Easter Eggs
What is it about a pretty ceramic egg carton that makes us weak at the knees? We love proudly displaying them on our brunch table or just opening up the fridge and seeing that pop of color. You Need These Rosemary Sweet Potato Rolls on Your Easter Table
Rolls are a must-have item on your Easter table. This year, instead of going the classic Parker House route, why not try something with a little more pizzazz? Something, perhaps, with rosemary, sea salt, and sweet potato? Sorry, spiral ham — these rolls are definitely going to steal the show this Easter. These rolls have a gorgeous golden hue, thanks to the addition of mashed sweet potato. Now, you might be thinking, mashed sweet potato? Won’t that make the rolls heavy?

These Donut Holes Are Filled with a Surprising Ingredient
There are donuts out there that pass as breakfast food, and then there are donuts that fall strictly in the dessert camp. These donut holes, filled with an ooey, gooey candy and served with a malted chocolate marshmallow fluff for dipping, are definitely the latter. Want to end your Easter celebration on a (really) sweet note? Right this way. Yes, these donut holes are stuffed with Cadbury Creme Eggs!

Recipe: Honey-Glazed Pork Tenderloin
Honey is a sweet friend to pork, made famous by the ubiquitous honey-baked Easter ham. The trouble with a ham is that it’s big enough to be a burden in a small kitchen. (Some people contend that eternity is one ham and two people.) A tenderloin, however, makes just enough for two to four servings, and still makes one fine Sunday dinner. The best thing about pork tenderloin is that it is very lean and cooks quickly.

Recipe: Matzo Granola with Vanilla & Almonds
If you celebrate Passover, you probably know what matzo fatigue feels like. The first few days are fresh and exciting — perhaps you’re snacking on it straight from the box. Maybe you’re slathering it with peanut butter and jam or topping it with cream cheese and lox, but soon even this gets boring. So where to go next? Next is granola. This matzo granola is so good, you may just find yourself stocking up on boxes of matzo to make it all year long.

Gefilte Fish and Horseradish: A Passover Love Affair
“Gefilte fish without chrain (horseradish) is punishment enough,” goes the old Yiddish proverb. Of course, as someone who’s crazy enough to produce gefilte fish for a living, I disagree wholeheartedly. But I can’t deny that the classic Jewish fish appetizer and its sinus-clearing condiment have a deep and meaningful relationship. One of my earliest Jewish food memories is actually refusing to eat the gefilte fish offered to me during the seder meal.

4 Tips for Guarding Your Gut During Passover (or Anytime)
I was raised in an Ashkenazi Jewish family, which means that unlike my friends from Sephardic or Mizrahi backgrounds, who eat rice and legumes and corn on Passover, I was instructed to avoid them all, along with any grain-based products that aren’t matzo. As such, I grew up associating Passover with an upset stomach. (This is what happens when you subsist on seder leftovers, matzo pizzas, and matzo spread with butter and jam.

You Won’t Want to Pass Over This Gluten-Free Matzo Ball Soup
Passover starts today, and with it comes matzo ball soup. But this isn’t any ol’ matzo ball soup — this one is completely gluten-free, thanks to chickpea flour. Yes, chickpea flour! This protein-packed flour, made from ground chickpeas, is a great gluten-free stand-in for the traditional matzo meal. Simply mix the flour with baking powder, salt, pepper, olive oil, and eggs and let the “batter” hang out in the fridge for three hours.

Make the Prettiest Mother’s Day Cocktails with This Violet Simple Syrup
Mother’s Day is right around the corner! This year, instead of giving flowers to your mom, why not drink them with her? That’s right — if you make this violet simple syrup today, you’ll be sipping a purple-hued French 75 come Sunday. To make the syrup, you’ll need to remove the stems from some (unsprayed) violets. After bringing a pot of water to a boil, you take the pot off the heat, add the violets, and let them steep for a full day.

What New Dads Really Want for Father’s Day
Buddy, you’re never going to get another decent night of sleep again! My husband and I heard this line several times a day in the months leading up to our son’s birth. Now that he’s here, people continue to inquire almost daily about the sleeping habits of our new little family. I implore you: Stop asking new dads about how much sleep they are getting. If dad or baby aren’t sleeping well, they don’t want to talk about it more than they already are.

This Is the Frenchiest Thing You Can Make in Five Minutes
In addition to tucking into some macarons, my prerogative on Bastille Day is to watch Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, drink rosé, and make this five-minute dinner. The simplicity of this recipe reminds me why we get all fussy about French food in the first place — and it has really good cheese. If you hadn’t guessed, it’s a ham and cheese baguette! Done up just like they do at the little cafes I’ve visited in Paris.
