Why Carpet Tiles Are the Right Rug for the Dining RoomKitchen
We love the look of a rug under the dining room table. If you have a dedicated dining room, it can make the room feel finished and well-designed. If you are carving a dining space out of a larger open-plan home or apartment, a rug can help the dining area feel more distinct. But rugs can be expensive, and the occasional spill is inevitable, which is exactly why we’re in favor of using carpet tiles in the dining room instead.

Setting the Table With: Gold FlatwareKitchen
What do you think of gold flatware? I never gave it much thought until recently, when it suddenly struck me how warm and beautiful it looks, especially when paired with a simple table setting. If you thought gold flatware was too ornate and fussy, you might be in for a surprise. I found it most lovely when it was set on a warm, rustic wooden table and paired with white dishes.

Give me something—anything—available in a few hundred colors and I’m smitten, but that’s even more the case with Glassybaby. These gorgeous glass votives hand-blown in Seattle from three layers of molten glass look opaque, but light a candle inside and they give off a soft, beautiful glow. I love the weight they give to the table—sturdy, grounding, gorgeous.

This schoolhouse-inspired dining room is so fun, with its floor-to-ceiling world map, vintage chairs, and purple (!) dining table. An Emerald Green Dining Room CeilingKitchen
A painted wall may be nice, but it’s not surprising. A painted ceiling? Now that’s a little more unusual! Are you bold enough to paint your dining room ceiling a rich shade of emerald green? We’ve seen painted ceilings before (remember this punchy yellow ceiling?), and I’m always intrigued by them. This green version is, yes, in a grand dining room much larger than what most of us have, but it’s still an inspirational idea.

We Need to Talk About This: Hay Bale Dining BenchesPeople
Here’s a question: how do you feel about hay bales used as dining room seating? I spotted them in this Oakland House Tour on Apartment Therapy, and their merits (or demerits) have sparked lively conversation on the comment boards over there. So, let’s discuss. First of all, I have to give the owner props for coming up with such an unusual (and probably very affordable) seating arrangement. Hay bale benches are not something you see every day, at least not inside a home.

Yes, There Is a Difference Between a Buffet, Sideboard, Server, and CredenzaKitchen
Buffet, sideboard, server, credenza: Do you find yourself using these terms interchangeably? I sure do! After all, there’s so much overlap between these furniture types that a piece’s classification is often determined solely by its location in your home. Confusing, right? Oh, and have you heard of a huntboard? I hadn’t either, at least until reading this helpful Houzz design article that breaks down the details of these terms.

Otomi Fabrics at the TableKitchen
Otomi fabric is handmade by Otomi Indians of Hidalgo, Mexico. The Otomi patterns (which are hand-embroidered in the traditional fabrics and printed in the manufactured facsimiles) are said to come from the ancient cliff drawings of the region. We love the bright colors and bold geometries of Otomi fabrics and would welcome such a lively print to the tabletop in our otherwise plain-Jane dining room:In these examples, we find Otomi fabrics or Otomi-inspired fabrics on tables or in the kitchen.

In Good Company: Dining Rooms with Beautiful BookshelvesKitchen
I was sitting in my dining room the other day when it struck me just how boring the room is. It’s furnished with a table. And chairs. And that’s it. What if — I began to wonder — one was surrounded by shelves and shelves of books in the dining room? Here are some inspiring examples. Not only would it serve an aesthetic purpose, but a practical one, too. When the room (or area) wasn’t being used for dining, it could function as a library of sorts.

The “Right” Height for Dining Room LightingPeople
When it comes to things like what height to hang dining room lighting, there’s not exactly a strict right and wrong. There are standards, but aren’t those made to be deviated from? Let’s take a look. The standard height for hanging a chandelier or pendant lamp over the dining table is 30 inches from the tabletop. But then again, rules are made to be broken. The fixture in my home, for example, is 36 inches above the tabletop.
