6 DIY Dining Tables You Can Make on a Budget
When I moved into my apartment, I did a half DIY job on my kitchen table, which is also our dining table. I painted the top and attached the legs, but it wasn’t really a building project. In Praise of the Beet
“The beet is the most intense of vegetables. The radish, admittedly, is more feverish, but the fire of the radish is a cold fire, the fire of discontent not of passion. Tomatoes are lusty enough, yet there runs through tomatoes an undercurrent of frivolity. Beets are deadly serious.” — Tom Robbins, Jitterbug Perfume Beets are indeed deadly serious, or at least they’re intense, concentrated, rich in color, and unmistakable in their boldness.

7 Glass Pendant Lights to Hang in Your Kitchen
Glass pendant lamps are one of our favorite ways to illuminate a kitchen. Pendant lamps have been popular for a long time — especially over island counters or dining tables — but we’ve seen more and more clear glass lamps popping up recently. Why are they so great? Mostly because they are almost invisible in your space. This can be a huge deal for a small kitchen or dining area.

What Are Some Good Cake Decorating Resources?
Q: As someone who has always been pastry bag-phobic, I have had a few occasions to use one in the last month and have been pleasantly surprised at the results. I’m now thinking I’d like to be able to create a nice-looking birthday cake, or something on that level. I browsed some cake decorating blogs, but what I found wasn’t to my taste and/or skill level.

How Cloth Napkins Became a Practical Everyday Choice for Me
The first set of cloth napkins I can remember owning was a cream-colored pair given to me as a gift. They were lovely out of the box, but didn’t stay lovely long. It only took a couple saucy dinners and a few lazy loads of laundry to relegate them to the back of my linen closet. Dingy, stained white napkins are just too sad. After this I was off cloth napkins for a few years, convinced they were too fussy for regular use.

5 Things We Can Learn from This “Ugly Duckling” Cottage Kitchen
I’m about to show you one of my favorite kitchen types. It’s what I like to call the Ugly Duckling kitchen — the kitchen with vintage cabinets, dated countertops, basic appliances, or other uninspiring details. The Ugly Duckling kitchen is often found in rentals, and likely hasn’t been updated in a few decades. On the surface it really doesn’t look like much. But Ugly Duckling kitchens?

How Do I Unstick My Stacked Bowls?
Q: A couple weeks ago I was stacking dirty dishes and two of my Pyrex bowls got stuck in each other. I poked around on the internet for suggestions on how to get them apart. One suggestion was to spray Pam around the rim of the bottom bowl — no luck. Another suggestion involved dipping the bottom bowl in hot water and putting ice in the top bowl — no luck. I even tried putting them in the dishwasher to see if that would help loosen them up — no luck.

4 Reasons Why Southerners Do Tomatoes Better Than Anyone Else
Tomatoes grow all over the world, and they play important roles in the cuisines of many cultures (Italia, anyone?). But down in Dixie, we do summer’s favorite fruit right (yep, tomatoes are a fruit). In fact, I’m gonna argue that we do them better than most. Proving this point was a mere few swift keystrokes for my food-writer friend and big time food-appreciator, Jennifer Kornegay. An Unexpected (and Easy) Refrigerator Makeover
I have never been very fond of my refrigerator, a white monstrosity that is really too big for my small rental kitchen and sits at an angle due to a slope in the floor. Yes, There Is a Difference Between a Buffet, Sideboard, Server, and Credenza
Buffet, sideboard, server, credenza: Do you find yourself using these terms interchangeably? I sure do! After all, there’s so much overlap between these furniture types that a piece’s classification is often determined solely by its location in your home. Confusing, right? Oh, and have you heard of a huntboard? I hadn’t either, at least until reading this helpful Houzz design article that breaks down the details of these terms.

A Minimal Raw Edge Wood and Iron Island
The kitchen island in this recent House Tour on Apartment Therapy, made of iron pipes and a live edge wood top, caught my eye because it’s not an island design you see very often. Owners Mike and Molly are fortunate to have enough space in their kitchen for a full-size table, but there isn’t actually a lot of workspace other than the countertop against the wall.

For the January Table: A Rustic Winter Tablescape
The holidays are gone and winter is here to stay, at least for a while, until spring blooms appear in a few months. So, why not embrace this peaceful season and its hues? This beautiful, rustic table setting really captures the feeling of the season, and it’s also laid-back and relaxed enough to not feel fussy. What I love most about this tablescape is its warmth. Winter’s palette can be quite bleak if not warmed up and softened with natural bark tones.

Make the Kitchen Cozy with an Easy Stovetop Potpourri
While my apartment is spacious enough, the kitchen is small and one of the first rooms visitors see when they enter. One of my go-to methods for drawing attention away from the limited space is to put the emphasis on another aspect. Appealing to other senses, whether through the sound of soothing music or the scent of freshly baked cookies, shifts the focus from the size of a space and makes the room more comfortable and welcoming. I am no stranger to small kitchens.

Popping Up in the Kitchen: The BEKVÄM Step Stool From IKEA
Much like the RÅSKOG cart, the BEKVÄM step stool is a kitchen workhorse. Once you start looking for it, you see it everywhere! The BEKVÄM comes in unpainted wood, but it seems you rarely find it that way. It’s so easy to paint, so you often see it as a brightly colored piece in the kitchen — a shot of electric yellow or red in the corner or under the table. It’s also a great piece for kids. Otomi Fabrics at the Table
Otomi fabric is handmade by Otomi Indians of Hidalgo, Mexico. The Otomi patterns (which are hand-embroidered in the traditional fabrics and printed in the manufactured facsimiles) are said to come from the ancient cliff drawings of the region. We love the bright colors and bold geometries of Otomi fabrics and would welcome such a lively print to the tabletop in our otherwise plain-Jane dining room:In these examples, we find Otomi fabrics or Otomi-inspired fabrics on tables or in the kitchen.

Inheriting the Family Dishes
My family is firmly in the 99% (and probably the lower half of 99% at that) and yet there is a set of china and sliver that has been passed down a few generations that will one day come to me. I’m lucky because I think the china pattern is pretty and I love the silver pattern. But this is not always the case. Looking for Decorative Refrigerator Magnets or Decals

What Are the Pros and Cons of Square Dishware?
Q: I’m planning to upgrade from the homely dish set that I bought as a college student ($12 at Goodwill, so I feel I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of them by now). I’m drawn by the clean-cut look of square plates, but I am wondering if there is a trade-off in functionality. Will they be a pain to put into cupboards or the dishwasher? Will dinners look undersized on a plate with all that extra real estate on the corners?

My Favorite Wine Glasses: Best Value for the Money
When I first became serious about wine, I really noticed the difference that a good glass made to my appreciation of the wine. At that time the choice of wine glass was pretty polarized. Either I spent a great deal of money (more than I could afford) or I had to be content with an industrial, heavy, thick-lipped glass. There was very little to choose from in between.Today, I can still spend a lot of money on a great glass, but I can also get a really good wine glass for a modest spend.

Gallery: Helpful Pairs of Salad “Hands”
The first time we saw a stocky pair of salad hands sticking out of a friend’s salad bowl, we were not impressed. They look like bear claws, frankly. But over the years, we’ve noticed we tend to toss salads with our bare hands—so much more efficient than trying to use traditional tongs. We can really dig down into the bowl to get the dressing and ingredients perfectly combined.
