Chrissy Teigen Made a Huge Sesame Street Birthday Cake, and Luna Helped
When you’re planning a birthday party for little kids, there has to be a cake. And there’s a whole lot of parental peer pressure involved in the type of cake you choose. You could show how much you care by baking your own cake, or you could buy a cake, which will make all the kids squeal with delight and shout, “I want a frosting rose!” Which will it be?

Cupcake Feminism: Is What We Bake a Matter of Gender?
Several years ago I read an article about “cupcake feminism.” I was intrigued. First, because of all the sweet treats out there, cupcakes are probably my least favorite (honestly, there are so many better baked goods out there, and I for one find the never-ending cupcake obsession to be exhausting). Second, because I wondered how cupcakes had any relationship to feminism. Could cupcakes really be the symbol of a new movement of feminists?

This Is Mary Berry’s Secret to Perfect, Crumb-Free Cake Icing
There’s really no better authority on baking than Mary Berry, a woman who has sold more than 5 million cookbooks, was hands-down the best judge on The Great British Bake Off, and clearly understands the value of making your own marzipan. The always impeccable 82-year-old has been described as the “Queen of Cakes” — a title she’s earned after spending the past 60 years teaching multiple generations of Brits how to bake.

Pistachio & Marmalade Breakfast Cake from Cara and Phoebe of Big Girls Small Kitchen
What do our fellow bloggers, writers, and online friends eat, first thing in the morning? We are asking some friends to share their favorite morning nourishment with us. I will cook and eat it too, and bring you their thoughts on what to eat first thing in the morning. This breakfast cake, brought to us by two talented ladies, is as fragrant and divine as it sounds. Pistachios, a dash of cardamom, marmalade and corn meal— these flavors will definitely wake up your palate.

This Is the Most Popular Cake Recipe on Pinterest
Making a cake is a commitment, especially if you’re making it to celebrate something, like a good friend’s birthday. It’s not like whipping up a weeknight dinner. If the cake doesn’t taste good, or if it’s more complicated than you initially anticipated, then you can’t just order pizza and call it a day. (I mean, there’s always your local bakeshop, but what if they’re closed that day?

Recipe: Pecan Cake
Rather to my surprise, this cake turned out deliciously light and soft. It has a very airy, tender texture, with a mild sweetness that reminded me vaguely of maple syrup. There is no butter – all the fat comes from eggs and buttermilk, so this is light enough to serve for breakfast with fruit and cream; and yet it’s unusual and grown up enough for an after-dinner dessert, served with dark chocolate or espresso sauce.

Living the DIY Wedding: Angel Food Wedding Cake
That being said, I had no intention of making a towering wedding cake. I just wanted dessert. Dessert around which some tiny semblance of ritual could occur. I looked at recipes for simple cakes, quick cakes, yellow cakes, and chocolate cakes. My trusted catering friend Katy phoned in every day from Portland, Oregon to see how I was holding up. When it came to the cake, she left no room for error and told me exactly what to do. “White cake is much more elegant than yellow.

Recipe: Sticky Toffee Cakelets
Back in LA for two weeks, I’m having flashbacks to the work I did here a few years ago on my book, The Greyston Bakery Cookbook (Rodale). One of the groups of recipes I added to the book that were not based on products from the Bakery were the individual cakes, which I affectionately called cakelets: Chocolate Molten Cakelets, Steamed Lemon Cakelets, and Sticky Toffee Cakelets. Any of these would be great for Valentine’s Day. Today I’m sharing the Sticky Toffee Cakelets.

How To Make Cake Pops
Cake balls, cake pops, cakesicles — have you tried them? They swept the internet like a tidal wave over the last few years, thanks in part to the delightful and amazing creations of Bakerella and other creative cooks. We finally decided to try them, and while ours don’t achieve the heights of more talented confectionery artists, they tasted pretty darn good!

Recipe: Weeknight Layer Cake Built for Two
We love to bake a good old-fashioned layer cake, and needless to say we love to eat one too. But the process of baking and decorating a large cake can be time-consuming, and frankly the week-long struggle against the temptation of leftovers isn’t always quite as fun as that initial slice.

How To Make Easter Egg Cakes
When we were growing up, my sister and I always got Easter egg cakes on Easter. They came from a bakery and had our names across the tops in delicate icing script. I insisted on chocolate frosting, which meant mine was always a very un-Easter-like dark brown, while hers was pink or yellow. But that egg cake was The Thing in our house. Now, I see them at New York City bakeries for an unforgivable amount of money.

Recipe: Hot Pink Raspberry Cake
Maya asked us how to make the fluffy pink strawberry cake she remembers from childhood. The problem with that cake is that it uses Jell-O and boxed cake mix, and now she wants to make it more naturally. Well, this recipe is still a bit of a compromise but oh will it give you that hot pink color and sweet fruity flavor!Last winter I showed you the wedding cakes I baked for my brother’s wedding.

Recipe: A Modestly-Sized Cake with Lemon, Walnuts, and Chocolate Chunks
A couple weeks ago I asked you what kind of cake I should make in a new cake pan from IKEA. Well, we had a couple guests over Saturday night, and I had a chance to use the pan for the first time. Here’s the recipe: a simple, modestly-sized cake that took literally 5 minutes to whip up in the mixer.I based this on the basic yellow cake recipe that Susie shared in this post. She mentioned that the crumb of this cake seemed a little coarse, so I added a bit of cream to make it softer.

We received mixed reviews after sharing our thoughts on the Cake Love cookbook last week. We’d tested 5 or 6 cakes from the book with extreme success, but those who live near the bakeries were in disagreement. Whipped Cream: The Secret to Beautiful Cakes?
This whipped cream won’t be going on top of the cake. No, it’s destined to go inside! This unusual technique calls for folding whipped cream into the cake batter, and the result? The most luscious, velvety cake you’ve ever eaten. No kidding. In her cookbook BakeWise, Shirley O’Corriher explains that adding whipped cream incorporates air into the batter (for a lighter cake), gives the cake a soft and silky texture, and adds a rich flavor.

Recipe: Lemon Yogurt Cake with Ginger-Thyme Syrup
Lemon yogurt cake is very popular and you can find dozens of recipes online, especially Ina Garten’s famous version that has a lemon infused syrup poured over the top. My go-to lemon yogurt cake is a slightly different recipe, but the idea of a syrup sure sounded good. What would happen if I used a little ginger and thyme instead of the lemon? The results were amazing. Light, crumbly, lemony cake with a sweet, slightly spicy moistness.

Baking with Whole Grains: Muscovado Sugar Cake Cookbook Recipe
This rich, moist cake from Good to the Grain by Kim Boyce was one of the very first recipes to catch our eye. It calls for a flour we’ve never worked with before – amaranth flour – and combines it with dark muscovado sugar (our new love) and thick apple butter (an old love). This combination just sounds too good to pass up!The head notes for the chapter on amaranth flour describe it as having a strong grassy flavor.

French Buttercream: What’s the Difference?
Ah, buttercream. Our cupcakes wouldn’t be the same without you, birthday cakes would be a fleeting memory, and licking the beaters wouldn’t be nearly as enticing. But all this we know. But did you know that all buttercreams aren’t created equal? Buttercream is a beloved frosting made with a combination of fat and sugar. At my house, we’re all about the butter + confectioners sugar variety.

Miniature Forelle pears are sweet, luscious and almost too adorable to eat. We especially love them layered into this dense cake, scented with the warm notes of cardamom and bright lemon zest.To start, we sliced the petite, seasonal pears lengthwise to maintain their petite pear shape. After a toss in a bit of cognac, lemon juice, sugar and vanilla we fanned them between layers of fragrant, buttery cake and let the oven work its magic.

Sweet Potato Cakelets from Good to the Grain by Kim Boyce
With Harvest Colors being the theme for this month here at The Kitchn, my mind immediately leaped into a bowl of whipped sweet potatoes. Is there anything more fragrant, brightly colored, happy and inherently Fall than a baked treat with a base of the delightful tuber? I made some sweet potato muffins from Kim Boyce’s Good to the Grain, and while I deviated a little from the recipe I wound up with fantastic results.

Autumn Recipe: Apple Cardamom Upside-Down Cake
As fall settles in for real, with winter around the corner, I am enjoying the pleasures of my spice cabinet. Ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves — they bring a warmth and a snap to autumn food. One spice, however, that I feel like I don’t reach for often enough is cardamom. This pungent, musky spice is often used in savory Indian foods, but not often enough in baking.

Recipe: Apple Yogurt Cake with a Cinnamon-Sugar Streak
My recipe stories seem to fall into a predictable rut: I had to feed a few people, and I needed something easy and simple, and so this recipe was born. But honestly, that’s the way I cook. Recipe: Duck Egg Sponge Cake with Cream & Strawberries
It was a happy day when a friend brought me six beautiful, farm-fresh duck eggs. Having never had duck eggs before, I was very curious about them, so I immediately cooked three of them sunnyside up to check the flavor and texture. Delicious. But I had heard that they were also excellent for baking. After some searching, I discovered a recipe from Darina Allen’s Forgotten Skills of Cooking: Duck-Egg Sponge Cake. The recipe was quite unusual.

Recipe: Elderflower Lemon Cake
With its sweet, delicate flavor of muscat, elderflower cordial is generally known as a mixer for refreshing spring and summer drinks. We also love using it in desserts, such as this lemony sponge cake infused with elderflower syrup and served with a dollop of sweet whipped cream. Based on Delia’s Smith’s classic Victoria sponge, the cake is light and moist with a burst of lemon from added zest and a drizzle of elderflower-lemon syrup soaked into the cake after it bakes.

Make or Buy? Cake Mix vs. Homemade
Cake mix sparks a lot of debate, it seems! On the one hand, it’s fast, convenient, and reliable. But on the other hand, homemade isn’t really that much fussier and it tastes a whole lot better. Or does it?For purposes of comparison, we’ll use Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Classic Yellow Cake Mix and our own recipe for yellow cake: Easy DIY Yellow Cake. Recipe: Almond Buttermilk Cake with Cherries
There’s a secret to this simple, almost pound cake dessert: it freezes beautifully! Perfect for tucking in a lunchbox or pulling out of the freezer on a rainy day, slices of this cake thawed will rival their just baked counterparts. And it works with any juicy fruit or berry! This cake ends up having a dense, perfectly cake-y texture. The cherries release their juices and form an almost caramelized layer on top the not too sweet cake.

Recipe: Cuatro Leches Cake
I have this thing about kids and sugar. I don’t think they make such a great combination and I grip to this conviction, hard. Recipe: Steamed Chocolate Pudding Cakes
When I set out to write my first book, one of the first recipes I knew I wanted to include was one for individual steamed pudding cakes. I ended up doing a lemon cakelet after a pregnancy-inspired double-order at a neighborhood eatery called Mary’s Fish Camp. The chef there walked me through the magic of a pudding cake; how, thanks to an imbalance of wet to dry ingredients, a creamy smooth pudding layer forms on the bottom and a layer of fluffy sponge cake blossoms on top.

These particular cakes took about 25 minutes to bake, then were cut into four layers and frosted. Tiny cakes like this look much easier to handle than the usual 9-inch layers, yet are nearly as impressive.

Recipe: Big Pink Rhubarb Cake
Here’s a recipe not for the faint of heart. It’s an over-the-top, 1950s-era recipe that I dug out of my grandmother’s collection. This confection combines yellow cake, rhubarb, strawberry jello, and marshmallows. If you aren’t afraid of that last sentence, then pull up a chair and join me for a slice of “big pink.” Much of mid-century American cooking was about convenience and mechanization.

Dessert Recipe: Croatian Stonska Torta
On my recent trip to Croatia, I went to Mali Ston, a tiny little village at the end of the isthmus that connects the Pelječac Peninsula with the mainland of the Dalmatian coast. My good friend Amy told me I must go there because “it’s an oyster town!” and these were some of the best she’d ever had, so of course I went straight for Mali Ston. She was right; it was oyster central. Oysters have been farmed here since Roman times.

I’ll be honest: dirt cake has never really been my thing. Most versions involve pudding filled with fake flavoring, gobs of non-dairy whipped topping and Day-Glo gummy worms — a dream come true for kids or a big crowd of drunk dudes (more on that later), but I need a little more.

Easy Summer Dessert Recipe: Individual Mixed Berry Clafoutis
As a devout chocolate lover since birth, I’ve never totally warmed to the idea of fruit desserts. Occasionally I’ll enjoy an old-fashioned strawberry shortcake or classic tarte tatin, but in the summertime I rarely seem to make pies and baked goods using our beautiful Georgia produce. All that changed a few years ago, however, when a pastry chef friend served me my first hot, fluffy blueberry clafoutis. It was truly love at first powdered-sugar bite.

The Best Thing I Cooked Last Week: Grilled Dutch Baby
The oven in our home is enormously inefficient. It takes so long to preheat because it has to preheat our whole kitchen first. This all makes for quite an unpleasant conundrum in the summer, but under the right influence it can also lead to some unexpected discoveries. Why not keep the house cool by keeping the oven off and cooking outside? Why not try cooking a Dutch Baby on the grill?

Recipe: Strawberry Upside-Down Cake
Traditionally, an upside-down cake is not outfitted with a piped and toasted meringue, nor is it usually drizzled with any sort of syrup. But let’s break the rules here. This Strawberry Upside-Down Cake with its double-dose of strawberries and topping of marshmallowy meringue is worth it. The Simplest 2-Ingredient Birthday Cake for Summer
Our youngest son has a summer birthday, the kind of birthday that gets ignored, poor guy. His cakes are usually afterthoughts, picked up from the bakery on the way home from work, or served at whatever restaurant he’s chosen for his party. This year, I was touched when he wanted me to make the cake for his eighth birthday myself, and I agreed, just as soon as I remembered my favorite, ridiculously easy cake.

Recipe: Mango Coconut Icebox Cake
Coconut is a polarizing ingredient. I have met people who can’t get enough of it, and people who flick it away like a bug. I can empathize with both. Coconut wafts in with the scent and taste of the tropics, but the problem, I suspect, for most haters is the texture; on a scale of tenderness, shredded dried coconut can fall somewhere between hay and chopped toothpicks. So this icebox cake avoids shredded coconut entirely.

The Easiest Way to Divide Cake Batter Evenly
Making a layer cake is hard enough. You’ve got to worry about baking the cake layers, making filling, getting the frosting on crumb-free, and let’s not even talk about the final decorating! Recipe: Sticky Caramel-Pecan Babka Loaves
It all started a few months back when Faith connected me with Jerry James Stone and his Three Loaves project. Jerry’s simple idea, an easy intro to giving, is that we all make three loaves: one to keep, one for a friend, and one to give to someone in need. A great project with a solid goal, so when Jerry asked if The Kitchn wanted to contribute a recipe, we jumped at the chance. But what to make? A sandwich loaf felt practical, but … yawn. I wanted to make something really special.

Domenica is a simply fabulous interpreter and author of Italian recipes.

Recipe: Funfetti Mug Cake
This Funfetti-inspired mug cake is all about you celebrating you. This version is somewhat healthier than a regular cake because it’s made with Greek yogurt and almond milk and calls for less sugar. It’s also smaller than a full-sized cake, so if you mindlessly eat the whole thing in front of the TV, the damage is minimal. (Although, a hefty dollop of whipped cream on top never hurt anyone.) The best part? It takes less than five minutes to whip up.
