A few smart tricks and tips can make it a more balanced dinner that you can feel good about.

This Is the Most Popular Casserole Dish on Everyone’s Wedding Registry
You can learn a lot about a couple by stalking, I mean looking at, their wedding registry. How else are you going to find out if they prefer drip coffee to espresso, what color their fluffy bathroom hand towels will be, and if they ever plan to host a holiday? It’s an absolute gold mine of information. Recently while mining for even more information, we asked our friends at Zola, an online wedding registry platform, for some insider intel on the latest registry trends.

Croissant Bread Pudding Is the Ultimate Brunch Win
If you’re hosting brunch this weekend, promise me you’ll stop at your local bakery and pick up some croissants today. Leave them out to get a little stale, and then use them to make the best bread pudding ever. With a sweet berry sauce and rich custard, this bread pudding is sure to impress your brunch guests. While it does take a little work to whip up the aforementioned sauce and custard, buying the croissants instead of making your own saves you major time in the kitchen.

Marshmallows on Sweet Potatoes: Who Thought This Up Anyway?
When it comes to holiday meals, I am all about the side dishes. I would happily forgo the turkey, ham, or centerpiece protein altogether in favor of a panoply of starchy, gooey goodness to pile on my plate. And I’m no side dish snob. At Thanksgiving, I crave unpretentious dishes like green bean casseroles, corn puddings, and mashed potatoes choking beneath a pool of butter and gravy. There is, however, one notable exception to my love of traditional Thanksgiving sides.

In Defense of Dump-and-Bake Casseroles
In the Midwest (where Superman and Bob Dylan are from, BTW), a casserole is not just a one-pan meal. It is how we cook, how we gather, and even how we think — a potluck attitude where everybody is expected to bring something to the table.

Recipe: Christmas Morning Banana Strata
This year, my family felt like switching up some of our holiday traditions – just a few tweaks to keep things interesting. One such update is to swap our typical Christmas breakfast of ham and cheese strata for a pleasantly unexpected banana version. This banana strata trades in sharp cheddar for rich and creamy mascarpone cheese, flecked with vanilla bean. While reminiscent of bread pudding, its more subtle sweetness makes it decidedly breakfast fare.

Recipe: Swiss Chard and Sausage Bread Pudding
When I invite friends over for dinner, I always swear to myself I’ll have dinner all ready and the kitchen cleaned up when they arrive, but more often than not, we drink our first glass of wine together while I’m still working at the stove and shoving dishes in the sink. Unless, that is, I remember to pull out this recipe. Then I’ve got dinner in the oven and I’ve had time to clean up before they even walk in the door.

Oyster Dressing, Just Like My Mother (and Grandmothers) Made
This Thanksgiving, we’re doing something different. After sharing almost every Thanksgiving of my life with my parents, I was at a loss this year because they’re both now gone. I am (so very, very) lucky to have a dear friend who is willing (enthusiastic, even!) to lump us in with her family for the holiday, and I can’t wait. (She throws a great party, and this will be no exception.) I offered to bring the oyster dressing, and planned to use my mom’s recipe.

8 Ways to Eat a Loaf of Bread for Dinner
Remember when everyone could eat bread? With more and more people avoiding gluten, bread has become a guilty pleasure at the dinner table, even for those of us who can tolerate it just fine. My deepest sympathies to those with gluten intolerance, who may want to look away while I take a moment to appreciate warm, soft, chewy, crusty, wonderful bread and all the ways you can turn a day-old loaf of it into a full meal.

Oyster Stuffing: Is it Worth All the Shucking?
We’ve never had oyster stuffing. Have you? Whoa, it’s a lot of work if you’re talking about shucking dozens of fresh oysters to chop and bake with your bread cubes. But the payoff (we hear) is that the bread soaks up the oyster liquor, and you get a richness that’s beyond what sausage or a little chicken broth can offer. As for the origins of oyster stuffing… it’s complicated.

Martha Stewart’s Macaroni & Cheese: The Ultimate Recipe?
Homemade macaroni and cheese is almost always a Good Thing, but is Martha Stewart’s recipe perhaps the best of all? Food52 has declared it a “genius recipe” One of the key elements is the mornay sauce that surrounds and permeates the pasta as it bakes. Flour, butter and milk are cooked into a béchamel to which grated sharp cheddar and Gruyere are added, resulting in a rich, creamy sauce that won’t break down during baking.

Brunch Recipe: Lemon Brioche French Toast & Raspberries
My ideal Mother’s Day brunch includes one my very favorite breakfast casseroles: A simple strata of brioche bread, layered with lemon zest and custard, and baked until puffy, golden, and silky smooth inside. This recipe is lightly adapted from one in my recent book, Not Your Mother’s Casseroles. • Not Your Mother’s Casseroles, Harvard Common Press. $11.15 at Amazon. It is so incredibly simple. Just slice any rich, eggy bread, such as brioche or challah.

Halving Casseroles: Tips for Reducing the Size of a Recipe
Casserole recipes are usually sized for a crowd. They are often designed to feed 6, 8, maybe even 10 people! But if you’re just cooking for one or two, that’s too much. The good news is that most casseroles are extremely easy to size down. Here are a couple of tips and guidelines for taking any one of the recipes we’ve posted during Casserole Week and adjusting it to a half-batch size.

Simple Tip: Let Your Casseroles Rest
A casserole is a great low-maintenance, hands-off dish to make for a dinner party; you can finish the side or salad while it’s cooking and still have time to sip a cocktail with your friends. But when you’re thinking about the timing of the meal, add on at least 10 minutes for the casserole to sit when it comes out of the oven. It’s just like resting meat. This is especially important for casseroles that have a decent amount of liquid or gooey cheese in them.

Recipe: Ham & Linguine Casserole, Mother of All Casseroles
I happen to own an extensive collection of Southern community cookbooks. My library includes tomes from junior leagues, churches, and schools, and all are equally cherished. Why? Because a community cookbook is like a time capsule. Its year of publication marks what families were cooking and eating and reflects the taste and traditions of a generation. My collection ranges from the early 1900’s to present day.

Memories of Christmas Breakfast Strata (and a Recipe)
I am not exactly sure what most people eat for breakfast on Christmas morning. There is often a lot of talk about dinner: roasts and hams, traditional side dishes, and glittering desserts. But the day has to start somehow; you can’t dig through stockings and unwrap presents on an empty stomach. And it’s Christmas, so it better be special. That means no bowls of cold cereal or skimpy slices of toast.
