Aside from using it to get dinner on the table on busy nights, I always lean on my slow cooker when I need to keep food or drinks warm for a crowd — it’s an invaluable tool at parties and potlucks. This Is How You Make Brussels Sprouts Irresistibly Good

These Honey Roasted Tomatoes Will Blow Your Mind
I love when a simple addition completely transforms a dish. Take this roasted tomato appetizer, for instance. Saltines Are Perfect. Here’s How to Make Them Even Better.
I have a not-so-secret love affair with saltine crackers. They are crunchy and salty and they are cheap. The only strike against them is that they’re a little plain, but this actually works to their advantage! Saltines are a blank canvas — perfect for soaking up butter and warm spices, or as a vehicle for prosciutto, smoked salmon, or even sorbet. I almost always have a sleeve on hand, for eating or for gussying up for guests.

Recipe: Mini Thai Pork Pitas
A few years ago, a recipe in a food magazine caught my eye. The recipe involved stuffing pita bread with a thin layer of seasoned ground lamb, then grilling the whole thing until the outside was crispy and the inside stayed nice and juicy. It was an outrageously delicious and fun idea, a bit like hamburger meets pizza pocket. I liked this idea so much I wanted to make it again, but this time with Thai flavors on cute little mini pitas!

The Fastest Way to Cook Artichokes
I’ve long had a love-hate relationship with steamed artichokes. I love the taste, but given the tedious preparation they require, I really hate cooking them at home … or at least I did, until I learned this speedy method. To be fair, there’s nothing particularly difficult or fussy about steaming artichokes on the stovetop. Although, if it’s your first time tackling these green globes, it might feel that way. Really, it just takes time and patience.

Recipe: Mini Polenta Grilled Cheese Bites with Marinara
There’s no denying the comfort that a grilled cheese sandwich brings. In fact, I don’t think of a grilled cheese sandwich as kid food — I think of it just as good food. The concept is highly adaptable too, so if you’re looking for a new version, or perhaps a gluten-free one, here’s one for you. You know those big tubes of shrink-wrapped polenta you see in the store? They make perfect “bread” for an Italian-inspired grilled cheese sandwich.

No time to pick a peck of pickled peppers? Stir up a batch of quick stovetop relish for a fancy little cookout condiment. Two kinds of vinegar might seem excessive, but the combination gives just the right amount of tangy backbone to the sweet peppers.

Cauliflower Hummus Is the Dip You Need in Your Life
We all love cauliflower at this point, don’t we? It has certainly come a long way. We’ve tried it as rice, couscous, pizza crust, and cake. The starch from the potato and whipped, slightly sweet cream cheese calms most (most) of the heat from the roasted jalapeño peppers.

A DIY Wedding Reception for 200: The Menu (With Planning Tips)
This week I’m showing you the big wedding reception I catered for friends earlier in the spring, and today I want to share the menu we finally landed on. The reception took place after dinnertime, and so the food was all small bites, with cake to follow. But I knew that a lot of people probably wouldn’t eat much dinner beforehand, so I leaned towards the heavy side of appetizers. Want to see what we served, and how we planned it out?

A Brief History of Smorgasbord: It’s Not Just a Buffet!
While smorgasbord has come to mean any old buffet offering a choice of foods here in the United States, the term originated in Sweden. Last Minute Appetizer: Crispy Brussels Sprouts Chips
I couldn’t bear to throw away all the tough outer leaves left behind from making roasted Brussels sprouts last week. So what did I do? What any enterprising and frugal home cook would do: I doused them with olive oil and made sprout chips. I hovered anxiously near the oven while they baked, resisting the urge to check on them too frequently for fear of letting the heat out.

What Are the Best Appetizers for Thanksgiving Day?
Q: My mom has tasked me with an appetizer for Thanksgiving. My family is generally pretty un-adventurous when it comes to food, but I also don’t want something like cheese and crackers, or something too filling before the large meal.Any ideas for something that’s light, interesting (for me), and yet not too “scary” (for the rest of the fam)?Sent by ShannonEditor: Shannon, what about a freshened-up relish tray?

Classic Recipe Update: Creamy, Herby Ranch Dressing
Ranch dressing from a bottle (or mixed from a packet) has a strong allegiance to my culinary childhood and for that reason alone I will not disparage it, just as I will not speak against pop tarts or packaged mac’n’cheese. But now that I’m an adult (what?), I prefer fresh flavors and real ingredients over the powdered additives and unknowable, unpronounceable chemicals of bottled dressings.
