There are people who love to clean and then there are people who love a clean kitchen. I most definitely fall in the second category. In fact, I would much rather clean other areas of the house. I’d rather wash the sheets than scrub the floors and I’d honestly rather clean the shower than the inside of my oven.

To take the sting out of cleaning the kitchen, there are a few tricks I’ve come to rely on. Feel free to steal them if you, too, would like to make cleaning the kitchen a little less annoying!

1. Streamline your cleaning supplies.

If an all-purpose cleaner or a microfiber cloth with water will work for most surfaces, do you really need 18 different cleaning supplies? Whittle your “collection” down to the things you actually use and stash them under the sink — neatly. This way, you can actually grab what you need, when you need it, and you’ll have overcome the biggest cleaning obstacle: getting started.

2. Invest in some special things for tasks you hate.

While there are lots of unnecessary cleaning tools out there, there are also lots that will make your life easier or a task more fun. If you hate mopping, for example, this might get you excited for the task. These brush attachments for a battery-powered drill will make cleaning your stovetop a million times better. And a steamer can help, too. My point? If something will make a cleaning task less annoying, take advantage of it!

3. Work from top to bottom.

If you sweep your floors and then wipe down your counters, chances are, you’re going to have to sweep your floors again. Don’t create more work for yourself or undo work you’ve already done! Work from top to bottom (upper cabinets, counters, floors) so that, when you’re done, you’re actually done.

4. Check your cleaning supplies when you go grocery shopping.

What’s more annoying than having the motivation to clean without the supplies you need to do it? To keep this from happening, check on cleaning basics like paper towels, dish soap, and all-purpose cleaner whenever you run to the grocery store. Or you can sign up for Amazon’s Subscribe & Save program for the items you tend to run through on a regular basis.

5. Line the tops of your cabinets and the fridge.

If your cabinets don’t go all the way up to the ceiling and your fridge’s top is also exposed, you’ll find that those surfaces get super dusty and greasy. While you can probably get away with not cleaning them, we think it’s important to do it at least a few times a year. If you line these spaces with newspaper or wax paper, then all you have to do is pull it up and replace it. Cleaning done.
