Chrissy Teigen Calls for the Return of Sheet Cakes in 2018

Sheet cakes are the unsung heroes of the baking world. Those flat, single-layer, rectangular cakes are easy to make and decorate, and they’re a staple of children’s birthday parties everywhere, but they don’t tend to wow a crowd like a towering layer cake. But now supermodel, cookbook author, and Twitter darling Chrissy Teigen is taking a stand for the little guy, and she says it’s time to bring back sheet cake.

It all started with one of those intense, undeniable late-night cravings. Because at 10 p.m. on Saturday night, Chrissy Teigen — who is currently pregnant with her second child — decided she wanted sheet cake.

Not long after that, Teigen’s craving had turned into an epiphany. She didn’t just want a sheet cake, she was over layered cakes entirely. 2018 was to be the year of the sheet cake.

“I want squares I can use my hands for,” she wrote. “Bring back sheet cake.”

The fact that you can eat a square of cake with your hands is an under-appreciated benefit of sheet cakes. A layer cake requires a fork and a plate, and at that point you might as well bring out a napkin and be fancy about it. But a square of sheet cake can be wielded in one hand, like a square cupcake with an even layer of frosting on top.

Teigen is onto something. Cupcakes from the store are virtually half frosting these days. There’s way too much frosting in the middle, and not enough at the edges. But a sheet cake’s smooth, single-layer surface means every bite has exactly the right amount of frosting.

In search of an update, about half an hour later another Twitter user wondered if Chrissy Teigen was really making a sheet cake at almost 11 o’clock at night. She replied that she was not baking a sheet cake after all, but she would be eating one, because her husband, John Legend, was actually making one for her.

John Legend is amazing. First he wrote “All of Me” for Chrissy Teigen, then he made her a sheet cake. What a great husband.
