My earliest frame of reference for a chocolate chip cookie is the classic Chips Ahoy — the chewy ones that come in a plastic container. Every other cookie that came after that, no matter how good, has never compared. You can put as much brown butter, specialty chips, and love as you’d like into your artisanal cookies (and it’ll be great), but to me, the grocery-store Chips Ahoy cookie exists entirely in its own category.

For the past 20-something years, these cookies have been small-but-mighty bites of nostalgia. That is, until I learned they’d be getting a major makeover with the brand’s latest launch: Chips Ahoy Big Chewy. So naturally I had to get my hands on some to see how they stack up against the original.

What You Should Know About Chips Ahoy Big Chewy Cookie

When I heard news of this launch I had to know: Exactly how big these are big, chewy cookies, anyways? At 2.5 ounces, they’re roughly the size of three classic chewy cookies combined into one, single serving-sized pouch. My eyes are all-in on the large version of the original, chocolate chip chewy cookie, but, for the cookie-curious, Chips Ahoy is also rolling out two other flavors — Big Chewy Chocolatey Brownie and Big Chewy Caramel Cookie — to its permanent lineup.

All three flavors will begin hitting shelves across the country this month. Prices vary depending on the retailer, but you can expect to pay somewhere around $2.29 for individual cookies, according to the brand. I personally find the price tag a bit steep, considering a 13-ounce container of the standard-sized Chips Ahoy cookies is $5.39 at Target. That being said, you can also buy them in bulk-packs of 14 on Amazon for $21.81, which breaks down to $1.55 per cookie.

My Honest Review of Chips Ahoy Big Chewy Cookie

Comparing this cookie to the original is a bit tricky — it’s essentially the same recipe, just larger. So, reader, yes, it’s really good. In fact, some may say it’s great.

To get a bit more detailed, I really appreciate that these cookies retain the nostalgic flavor that I’ve grown to love, in a convenient, portable package. It’s not exactly easy to carry around an entire plastic container of miniature cookies, but this oversized version can easily fit in my backpack or even a large pocket. Also important to note: I’d need to break out my measuring tape to confirm, but I believe that the chocolate chips are also larger than the ones in the O.G. chewy cookies. I’ll never say no to extra chocolate, so I’m all in!
