Chef José Andrés Brings World Central Kitchen to Ukraine-Poland Border to Feed Refugees
José Andrés has long been revered as a chef and philanthropist. His World Central Kitchen has gone around the world to feed people in need following disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes, and he’s back at it again in the biggest of ways. He’s now at the border of Poland, making sure the Ukrainians who are trying to cross the border have a hot meal waiting on the other side.
“People of the world … Like you, I am distraught watching Ukraine under attack. We must come together as a force for good! @WCKitchen is on [the] Poland border delivering meals tonight — Romania soon,” Andrés tweeted.
The chef posted a video with his tweet about why this mission is so incredibly important. “Here is a fight and we’re gonna make sure that nobody’s going hungry, and we show the respect they deserve,” he said. “But again, [it’s] no more of allowing people [to] think they are the top of the world, that they are bad people bringing the worst out of humanity. We need to be a force of good.”
While there are humanitarian organizations setting up shelters for those trying to flee the Russian attack, Andrés is trying to make sure everyone is fed good food, too. According to an Instagram post shared by the acclaimed chef, these meals include options such as chicken stew, soup, and apple pie.
José Andrés won Jeff Bezos’ Courage and Civility Award last year, and as part of that award, he received $100 million to use toward this charity work. He’s using that money now to help feed and care for the Ukrainian refugees.
That’s not to say that the effort doesn’t continue to need all the support it can get. To help the mission, you can donate to the World Central Kitchen here.
