If you’ve never had the pleasure of drinking a frozen hot chocolate from Serendipity 3 in New York City, you might be wondering what the fuss is all about. Essentially a frozen shake that tastes like hot chocolate, it’s delicious, but it’s sure to leave you with a sugar hangover. This recipe from My New Roots puts a healthy spin on this sweet concoction, so you can drink it for breakfast and not worry about crashing a few hours later.

With only four ingredients, this frozen hot chocolate couldn’t be easier to make. All you need is some milk, raw cacao powder, pitted dates, and frozen cauliflower. Yes, you read that correctly! Frozen cauliflower is the secret to the creamy, thick texture of this shake. You won’t really be able to taste it (especially if you are generous with the sweet dates), so it’s the perfect way to sneak in an extra serving of veggies.

You can prep a head of cauliflower and freeze it in advance, or you can just buy a bag of frozen cauliflower from the store. You can also sub in regular ol’ cocoa powder if that’s what you have in your pantry. The author uses oat milk in her recipe (she also freezes it in an ice cube tray to make for an even colder, creamier drink), but choose whatever type of milk you like best.

Once you’ve made the original recipe, you can also experiment with blending in fun extras like protein powder, soaked cashews, or vanilla. To make it really look like its decadent cousin, you can also serve it with a dollop of whipped coconut cream and some cacao nibs on top. Cheers!
