Cauliflower Flour Is the Latest in Alternative Low-Carb Baking
Cauliflower flour is here to make all your low-carb, gluten-free baked goods an (easier) reality. It’s a fantastic development that will be great for Paleo and keto dieters, people who don’t eat gluten, and anyone who wants to cut down on carbs in their baking.
It is, however, driving me absolutely bonkers today, because every time I say the words “cauliflower flour,” the conversation devolves into a Who’s on First-style comedy routine.
“You should tell your gluten-free dad that someone invented cauliflower flour.”
“What?”
“Cauliflower flour.”
“What?”
“Cauliflower. Flour.”
“What’s cauliflower flower?”
“It’s flour made of cauliflower.”
“Why would someone make a flower out of cauliflower?”
This has been going on all day.
Anyway. The new Cauli-Flour baking mixes from Caulipower — the company who created cauliflower-crust frozen pizzas and quickly became the fastest-growing frozen pizza brand in the country — could be a game-changer for a lot of people. It has the look and consistency of regular flour, and the company says you can just swap it cup for cup with any other flour in a recipe. That means you can use it to make brownies, muffins, pretzels, cookies, bread, pizza, and more. You can make flatbreads or use it to coat fried chicken. You can even make pie crust with it.
“Yes, we’re serious,” the Cauli-Flour bag proclaims.
The Cauli-Flour “Make Whatever You Want Mix” comes in two varieties: original and Paleo. Both are gluten-free, and cauliflower is the first ingredient. The original variety also includes rice and quinoa flours and sugar. The Paleo variety has almond, tapioca, and arrowroot flours. Both varieties have fewer calories, carbs, fat, and sodium, and are higher in fiber than regular all-purpose flour and most gluten-free and Paleo baking mixes.
The original version of the mix is available now for $8.99 for a 12-ounce resealable bag, and the Paleo version will be for sale early next month. Both will be available for sale on Amazon, which means you will be able to acquire it without having to ask a grocery store clerk for “cauliflower flour.” And then you’ll be on your way to gluten-free brownies and cauliflower pie crusts.
