While the sentient world can't bear to live without Carla Hall's infectious, vivacious enthusiasm, the Top Chef competitor and former host of The Chew talked to New York Magazine's The Strategist about the products that she can't live without — including a kitchen tool you might not even have heard of.
Hall, whose new cookbook, Carla Hall's Soul Food: Everyday and Celebration, came out this week, details her favorite moisturizing shampoo, eyeglass cleaner, weighted blanket, compression socks, cap, and Kenyan chamomile tea on the list, but only one kitchen tool makes it on — a bit surprising for a chef. The tool is something called a whisk wiper, and it's a small piece of plastic that you fix on your whisk before you use it. Then, when you're done, you slide it off, and it pulls the batter or whatever down, into the bowl. "Don't waste any of that!" says Hall. And, she adds, it makes cleaning up that much better.
The version she recommends is available at Walmart and on Amazon and comes in eight different colors, including clear, as well as vibrant green, purple, or orange. It comes with its own 11-inch stainless steel whisk, and can also be used to wipe out the bowl when you're done whisking (even if the bowl has edges) or to stand the whisk up without dripping onto the counter.
Carla is definitely not the only fan, either — with 73 reviews on Amazon, almost all of them are five-star, with people praising how sturdy it is and how useful it is with thick batters and doughs. There's even a second version of it that hooks onto your KitchenAid mixer whisk attachment, for those of us who don't whisk by hand. Really, the only downside seems to be that there's no brownie batter or cake mix left to lick off when you're done!
