I love a good biscuit. I bake a batch of Southern buttermilk biscuits once a week for my family, and I love the satisfaction of folding cheese, herbs, even sprinkles or lemon and poppy seeds into cream or cathead biscuits. And while I consider myself a homemade biscuit expert, I still think there is a time and place for using canned biscuits. Quick weeknight pot pies, camping meals, and even the occasional chicken sandwich can all be made faster — and more easily — with a tube of biscuit dough.

While canned biscuits will never replicate the exact flavor or texture of the homemade stuff, they definitely have their place at the table, especially around the holidays. I set out to try as many brands and varieties as I could in order to find a tube that most closely delivers the buttery, flaky goodness that we know and love. I selected several brands from several stores (and even a few varieties from the same brand) and baked them all for a side-by-side comparison.

One clear winner stood out — here’s the canned biscuit that I’ll be buying again and again.

Best Canned Biscuits: Immaculate Flaky Biscuits

Tall, flaky, and buttery, the Immaculate Flaky Biscuits were the best canned biscuits out of all the ones we tried. The biscuits rose and browned beautifully and evenly in the oven while ones from the other brands rose and sank, or baked unevenly. They had the closest to homemade flavor and texture‚ with plenty of butter, a light tang, and a tight crumb between the layers. They also had the shortest ingredient list of the biscuits I tested.

These biscuits were a little harder to find in the small city where I live, though, so I wanted to note that Pillsbury Grands Southern Homestyle Butter Tastin’ Biscuits had similar baking results. They weren’t quite as tasty as the Immaculate Biscuits, but they’d be an excellent runner up in a pinch. You honestly can’t go wrong either way.
