Last week Trader Joe's highlighted a new limited-edition cheese that they will offer as of this September. Instead of something fancy or "entitled," as they note in their release, they decided to go with something a little more fun and wholly American. The resulting product is an apple pie cheddar cheese, which they describe as "sassy and sensible."
When I showed the new cheese to my colleagues, there were a lot of emotions about the product. Lauren was concerned about how cinnamon, ginger, and cheese would work together, while Kaitlin thought it sounded delicious and couldn't wait to try it. Where do you stand?
Apple pie and cheddar cheese are a classic combination. In many parts of New England and the Midwest, people enjoy a slice of hot apple pie with a chunk of cheddar cheese on the side or melted on top. It's utterly delicious, and if you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend giving it a shot the next time you are faced with an apple pie.
But does this combination work as one entity? I purchased the cheese at my local Trader Joe's in New York to find out for myself. The apple pie flavor is very subtle in the cheese, and it tastes way more of cinnamon than apple. It almost reminded me of that cranberry cheese you might have seen during the holidays, but with way less fruit. I wasn't obsessed with it, but I can see it working in certain situations.
So the real question becomes what do you even do with this kind of specialty cheese, besides stuffing it in your face? I think it makes sense as a dessert cheese — something you might serve with a handful of olives and crackers. I also like the idea of making a grilled cheese with this cheese and adding some fresh apples to the sandwich.
Is this something you would try? Are there any brilliant or bizarre things that Trader Joe's has come out with that have caught your eye? Let us know in the comments.
