Other highlights: This cookbook is not recipes developed for Tyler Florence’s restaurants, as you might expect — it’s targeted squared at home cooks. The recipes are the kind of simple, everyday fare that we want to cook, but are often frustrated by: mac and cheese with goopy sauce, pork chops that lack flavor, scrambled eggs that are always dry. Florence and his team tackles each of our favorite recipes, explaining what makes them work (or not), where to pay attention, what ingredients to use, and chef tips that help make it fantastic.

The casual “notebook” design and Instagram-feeling photos walk the line between hokey and genuine, for me personally, but ultimately I find myself getting drawn into the pages. (The entire book really was shot on an iPad, too!) Florence also has this way of talking directly to the reader and explaining tricky steps in a way that makes perfect sense.
