Could This Low-Calorie Ice Cream Be the New Halo Top?
In the last couple years, low-calorie ice cream has been taking over the freezer aisle. The creamy treat allows people to go to town on their favorite flavor without worrying about calories (whether this ice cream actually tastes good, of course, is totally a matter of preference.) You might already be familiar with new brands like Halo Top or Enlightened, but now a more established brand is hopping on the bandwagon and will give these trendy new guys a run for their money.
Breyers just announced the new Delights line, which mimics the Halo Top effect: It places its calorie count for an entire pint on the front of the package over a spoon overlay.
The line comes in four flavors: vanilla bean, chocolate, mint chip, and cookies & cream. It features roughly 20 grams of protein per pint and a total calorie count in the mid-200s or low 300s. The products are currently available in select locations and are releasing nationwide this August.
But there’s reason to opt for moderation with these ice creams, whether it be Halo Top or Breyers. The frozen treats are sweetened with erythritol — a compound found naturally in fruits. The ingredient is safe, but too much can lead to diarrhea and headaches, according to the New York Post.
That said, Breyers’ success will depend on how good the product tastes. And Halo Top is killing it in the low-calorie high-protein guilt-free indulgence game. Consider this: According to Ad Age, Halo Top has experienced a 2500 percent spike in sales from 2015 to 2016. That translates to more than 13.5 million pints sold.
