Breakfast Cereal Doughnuts Are the Best of Both Worlds

Today is National Doughnut Day, and what better way to celebrate than by making a batch of these cereal-topped doughnuts? With this recipe you’ll never have to choose between cereal or doughnuts for breakfast again.

Now, let’s be clear about something right up front: Making doughnuts from scratch is no quick feat. This is a real-deal fried doughnut recipe, so you’ll need to set aside some time and pull out some specialty equipment to make it happen. All of the work is worth it, though — trust me!

After kneading the dough in a stand mixer, letting it rise, rolling it out, cutting it with a doughnut cutter, and letting it rise again, you can then move on to the frying part. (You’ll need a large pot and a candy thermometer for this step.) Once the doughnuts are fried and have cooled a bit, you can dunk them in glaze — the author gives recipes for both vanilla and chocolate glaze — and top each one with different types of cereal.

As far as which cereal to use, classics like Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, or Cocoa Puffs are sure bets, but you can’t really go wrong here. Just choose your favorites (or your kids’ favorites) and you’ll be a breakfast hero.
