I Can’t Stop Thinking About Painting My Kitchen Ceiling After Seeing This Dramatic Transformation
I’m obsessed with colorful kitchens — I’m charmed by the idea of color-drenching a space and flooding the room (especially the ceilings!) with one shade. If I see a room with a painted ceiling, I immediately swoon. That was exactly the case when I saw the kitchen in Katie DeGroot’s gothic revival home.
Unlike in other homes that continue the monochromatic theme through a space, DeGroot’s kitchen is unique because only the ceiling is painted. And it’s not just any color — it’s a dark, dramatic black while the walls are stark white. It turns out painting a kitchen black is a popular design trend of 2024, and for good reason (I mean, look at the dramatic cabinets in this kitchen!).
It’s fair to question whether painting a kitchen — especially a ceiling — black will make the space feel smaller than it is. But I think DeGroot’s home is a great example of how the bold paint encourages guests to look up, accentuating the room’s height. Plus, there’s something so cozy and moody about the dark ceiling that makes me want to cocoon.
The black ceiling also harmoniously ties in other pops of black throughout the room, like the hanging cast iron skillets, dark-colored painting above the stove, radiator, and striking dark gray countertops. I appreciate small-but-daring choices that pack a lot of design punch, and this ceiling is a fantastic example of achieving that goal. It’s striking while simultaneously subdued because it’s not in your face, like painting all the walls the same color (black or not).
Since moving into the home in 2019, DeGroot has been “updating paint colors and turning it from a themed museum into an elegant family home.” This isn’t the only room with unique charm and flair. To see more, visit the full home tour on Apartment Therapy.
