Few things are more delightful than a gathering of friends and food, so on the occasion of my partner’s birthday, I suggested we hold a birthday potluck. Each guest would bring one of his favorite dishes (guaranteed to be the perfect gift!) and we’d celebrate over a feast…

And what a feast it was! We had cupcakes, bacon-covered doughnuts, barbecue, artisanal bread, jjajangmyeon (Korean black bean noodles), pupusas (Salvadoran stuffed masa cakes), and more. It was a celebration not only of Gregory’s tastes but also the efforts of our friends, many of whom are talented cooks, bakers, and seekers of good food around the city.

Prior to the gathering, I sent out a list of his favorite foods but encouraged attendees to bring anything they thought he might enjoy. I also reassured the non-cooks that purchased foods were welcome, and for those who were less food inclined, I suggested drinks or other party supplies. The party atmosphere ended up being casual, eclectic, and fun for both the hosts and guests. By the end of the night, I think everyone had at least one favorite new dish or the name of an eatery to try, and Gregory was beaming that it had been his favorite birthday party ever. I have a feeling we might be doing this every year from now on!

Have you ever thrown a birthday potluck for yourself or someone else?
