A Popular Florida-Based Ice Cream Brand Is Being Recalled Due to Listeria Outbreak
You know you have a real problem when some of your favorite foods are causing people to get sick. We’ve seen it recently with the recall of Jif peanut butter products, and now — after an investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other Florida health organizations — it has been announced that there is a link between Big Olaf Creamery and a listeria monocytogenes outbreak, in which almost two dozen people have gotten sick.
The FDA reported 23 illnesses, 22 hospitalizations, one death, and one “fetal loss” due to the outbreak. “The true number of sick people in an outbreak is likely higher than the number reported,” the CDC noted in an earlier notice about the illnesses. According to the notice, the investigation resulted in Big Olaf starting to contact retail locations to recommend that its ice cream not be served in early July. Ultimately, due to the potential for listeria contamination, this led to Big Olaf expanding their safety measures to a full recall of all flavors and a large amount of its ice cream on July 13.
Available at restaurants, senior homes, and Big Olaf locations throughout Florida (as well as a single location in Fredericksburg, Ohio) this recall could affect a lot of people. All Big Olaf products with an expiration date through June 30, 2022 are subject to the recall. So, if you have Big Olaf ice cream at home, you are strongly urged to throw it away or contact the company at 941-365-7483 with further questions.
