My childhood home is within walking distance of a Wawa. Only I can’t remember ever actually getting there by foot — probably because we were always planning on buying way too much to carry back. Even when we were “just stopping in for milk,” we’d end up walking out with our arms full. (My dad had a weakness for Tastykakes!)

My family would pop in to pick up things we we were out of, get sandwiches to pack for picnics, and get supplies for road trips. Now, as a grown-up, I still swing by whenever I’m leaving my mom’s house to head back up to my own. (Hey, it’s a three-hour drive and I am my father’s daughter.) I was home recently and decided to take official stock at my beloved Wawa. Ready? These are the very best things to buy at Wawa if you’re headed on a road trip this summer.

1. All the Tastykakes

If you’re familiar with these little treats, it will not surprise you that they’re first on the list. If you’re not familiar, here’s what you need to know: Tastykake is a Philly-based snack company and, though they’ve expanded in distribution since I was a kid, they’re still not readily available nationwide. There are lots of options, and the Butterscotch Krimpets and Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes are not to be missed. Also, the cashiers will not judge you if buy an entire box at once. I this know from experience(s).

2. Made-to-Order Hoagies

Next up, hoagies. Yes, hoagies. These fancy touch-screens weren’t a thing when I was a kid, but I’ve learned to embrace them. You can customize your sandwich to your heart’s content, and the quality is still as good I remembered. One suggestion, though: Please don’t eat a messy sub while driving. Pull over somewhere safe first.

3. Soft Pretzels

I’m just going to say it: Wawa’s soft pretzels are better than any pretzel I’ve ever had in New York City. For starters, they’re Philly-style (a squished 8 shape) instead of NY (the expanded knot shape), which means the inside is doughier. I’ve bought these in the middle of the night on my way into town, expecting them to be hard and stale, but they never are. They’re always warm, soft, and perfectly salted. And they’re less than a buck each.

4. Milk Bar Cookies

This was a fun surprise! My husband and I gave out Milk Bar cookies at our wedding (many) years ago. And now here they are at Wawa. Two for $2.50, no less! No road trip is complete without a sweet — or three.

5. Keto Snack Mix

If you’ve gone keto, don’t worry, Wawa still has options for you. With a combo of nuts and crispy cheese bits, this snack mix is fun (even if you’re not keto!). Looking for more keto-friendly options? The store also carries Whisps and they stock hard-boiled eggs in the grab-and-go fridge section.

6. Dot’s Homestyle Pretzels

More pretzels! My former colleague, Ariel Knutson, turned me onto these pretzels. They’re super-savory, thanks to a dusting of MSG. Open up the bag, roll the top down, and set the whole thing in your car’s cupholder area for easy access.

7. Peach Iced Tea

I don’t even like iced tea, and I love Wawa’s own peach version. It’s especially great paired either of the pretzels I mentioned above!
