I’ve always loved grocery stores. I have vivid memories of what it was like to go food shopping with my family. In particular, I remember my mom allowed each of us three kids to pick out one snack on our regular trips to Walmart. We all had different, ever-changing tastes, so this little ritual ensured that each of us would have something we’d love.

My older brother’s pick almost always included some kind of chocolate. Our eldest sister had the sensibilities of an adult from birth, so her selection was often the kind of thing your grandma would keep in the pantry (sorry, sis, but it’s true!).

As the chaotic youngest kid, my picks were all over the place: fancy cookies one week, my favorite variety of pretzels the next, chips with interesting packaging another. Now, as an adult, it’s safe to say I’m still an equal opportunity snack lover. That’s why you’ll find sweet, savory, salty, crunchy, and everything in between among my list of go-to Walmart snacks.

1. LesserEvil Organic Himalayan Pink Salt Popcorn

This is a new one in my repertoire, but my love for it was almost instant. The coconut oil used to cook the popcorn gives it a nearly sweet flavor for the first few kernels. Once my palate acclimates to the unique oil, all I taste is crunchy, subtly salty, popped corn that rivals the snack fresh off the stovetop

2. bettergoods Red Pacific Sea Salt Flavored Potato Chips

As much as I love simple salt on my popcorn, I’ll always reach for chips with a special seasoning. These remind me of the salty potato chips of my childhood, but thicker cut and with more depth of flavor. It’s not just salt and potato I taste — there’s a slight smokiness, no doubt brought from the Red Sea salt. My favorite way to eat them is with a homemade ranch. Nothing fancy, just nondairy Greek yogurt and ranch seasoning

3. OREO Thins

When OREO came out with Thins, I was sold immediately. Crunchy cookies with just a whisper of frosting in between? Count me in. Between my husband and me, a pack of these doesn’t last long at our house.

4. bettergoods Plant-Based Mint Chocolate Chip Oatmilk Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert

When bettergoods’ plant-based desserts first arrived on shelves, I knew I had to try them all. And when I did, Mint Chocolate Chip was the one I couldn’t put down. It’s important to note that I almost never order mint chip on a trip to the ice cream parlor, so this was quite the shock. But it’s the perfect blend of creamy, dreamy mint with the wafer-thin bites of chocolate I clearly love based on my other snack selections.

5. Dot’s Homestyle Original Seasoned Pretzel Twists

I’m a lifelong pretzel lover, so I’d been eyeing Dot’s for a little while before trying them on a whim during an unexpected trip to Walmart. It was an impulse buy, the kind you make when the errands are taking too long and your stomach demands to be fed. I’m pretty sure that first snack-size bag I ever purchased was empty before I returned home. The original seasoning has the familiar tang of onion and garlic you’d expect from any snack mix, and the pretzels are perfectly snappy and delicious.

6. Simply Tostitos Organic Blue Corn Tortilla Chips

One thing you’ll always find in the pantry when my family gets together is tortilla chips. While my brother prefers his coated in nacho cheese seasoning and my sister’s favorite kind comes in a fancy-looking butcher paper sack, I gravitate toward Tostitos Blue Corn Tortilla Chips. It’s another short ingredient list — just blue corn, sunflower oil, and sea salt — which I appreciate. They’re also straight-up tasty. I like to pile them in a towel-lined bowl, microwave them for a bit, and eat them warm with guacamole or pico de gallo.

7. Triscuit Sea Salt Crackers

When it comes to crackers, there are so many great options. Triscuit’s signature shredded wheat crackers have the snappy quality I love (I’m sensing a pattern here, are you?). Plus, they contain just three ingredients: whole wheat, canola oil, and salt. My favorite way to enjoy them is with a — you guessed it — thin slice of sharp cheddar cheese. They’re simple, salty, crunchy, and all of the things my grab-and-go snack dreams are made of.

8. Cheez-It Extra Toasty Cheese Crackers

This is the snack that truly brings me back to childhood. Cheez-It crackers taste like lunchtime in the public school cafeteria: salty, crunchy, with a dash of adolescent angst. The Extra Toasty ones (a growing snack trend!) are also extra delicious with an intensely savory, aged-cheddar flavor.

9. Rancho Meladuco “Grinders” Medjool Dates

These plump dates with a texture similar to thick caramel have quickly become a favorite of mine. They’re absolutely delicious alone and, when combined with a little almond butter, chocolate and sea salt, bear a striking resemblance to a Snickers bar (thanks, TikTok!). Slice them in half, remove the pit, fill with your preferred nut butter, and cover in chocolate with a sprinkle of sea salt. Freeze for an hour and enjoy.

10. Solely Organic Pineapple Fruit Jerky

Fruit jerky is not something I ever thought would end up on my personal snack roundup, but here we are. To be clear, I love fresh fruit of all kinds. I’m just usually not big on dried fruit, especially on its own. But the fruit jerky Solely makes, like Mango & Raspberry and Pineapple Fruit Jerky (not pictured), really got me. As the brand name suggests, it really is solely pineapple. And, wouldn’t you know, it’s got all the sweet and tang of a fresh pineapple, just concentrated into a chewy snack.

11. G.H. Cretors Cheese & Caramel Popcorn Mix

A bag of this mix always reminds me of the holiday popcorn tubs my mom would order from Garret’s or Nuts on Clark in Chicago. She’d send the cheese and caramel mix to family members across the country as a family Christmas present, but she always made sure a tub ended up at our house, too. Since moving to the Midwest, I’ve learned this is actually called Chicago Mix — a sweet and salty combo that is downright delicious.

12. Pepperidge Farm Classic Cookies Collection

It’s nearly impossible to choose a favorite Pepperidge Farm cookie. As a teenager, I babysat for a family that always had a bag or two of Milanos in the cupboard, and they encouraged me to help myself. These days, if I’m reaching for Pepperidge Farm cookies, I’m going for the variety pack. The mix of nine is a real choose-your-own adventure. My top four? Buttery Chessmen, crispy caramelized Bordeaux, crunchy Brussels (with its thin dark chocolate layer), and classic dark chocolate Milanos.
