We Asked 3 Arab American Cooks to Share Their Favorite Store-Bought Tahini
Tahini is one of those pantry staples that I could technically make at home — but typically I find myself reaching for the store-bought stuff over using my the food processor. Because who doesn’t love a good shortcut in the kitchen? Whether I’m adding it to my morning smoothies, mixing it into vibrant dips (like this smoky avocado one Chef Mohammad Abutaha created for the azoumeh he hosted along with Chef Reem Assil), whipping up versatile sauces, or making allergen-friendly cookies (and blondies), a jar of tahini is the ultimate assist.
Which jar will bring that beautiful, nutty flavor to all my dishes? I asked three cooks to share their favorite store-bought tahini and, it turns out, they each had a different pick! “The intensity of the flavor is a personal preference,” says Chef Tariq Nasir. “So, I would recommend trying several types to find the flavor you like best.” Here are some to start with.
1. Al Arz Tahini
“Tahini will vary in flavor, depending on the sesame seeds, where they come from, how they are stored, and whether or not they have been roasted. Personally, I really like the Al Arz brand for its velvety texture and full, nutty flavor. It’s also produced by a small family business in Nazareth. A couple of others I like and find consistently are Al Wadi and Beirut, both from Lebanon.” — Tariq Nasir, chef, cookbook author, and founder of Chef Tariq

2. Ziyad Tahini
“When it comes to finding the right tahini, I look for a brand that has a smooth and silky texture, and a gentle roasted sesame flavor. Ziyad brand tahini is my absolute favorite and go-to whether I’m making hummus, falafel, or using it in my baked goods. Definitely my top pick; I hope you enjoy it in whatever you cook up!” — Cosette Posko, founder, recipe developer, and photographer of Cosette’s Kitchen

3. Al’Ard Premium Palestinian Tahini
“I prefer to use tahini that’s made by Palestinian makers. Tahini from the Nablus region of Palestine, for centuries, has been distinguished for its craftsmanship, pure and delicate flavor, and creaminess. My favorite is Al’Ard, which is made by small farmers in Nablus, Palestine, from raw sesame seeds.” (It’s Chef Abutaha’s favorite as well!) “It lacks bitterness and has a fantastic buttery consistency.” — Marcelle G Afram, chef and owner of Shababi Diner
