Sprinkles! Sorry, it’s hard to say that word and not use an exclamation point after it. Just looking or thinking about them gets us excited for a party or a celebration. They are so fun! See, it’s happening again.

Okay, we are going to attempt to calm down in order to present you with this list. These are our picks for the best sprinkles out there, based on what you need — whether you’re making a simple cake or you want it to look like a unicorn exploded.

The Best Rainbow Sprinkles

When it comes to rainbow sprinkles, you need two things: a lot of them and for them to be in bright, vibrant colors. It’s hard to get both at the same time. Some of the brightest ones come in the smallest packs, and vice versa. These are a little crunchier than most, but that means they hold up well on (or in) a cake.

The Best Nonpareils

Wilton Rainbow Nonpareils, $2 for three ounces

Go with a classic here. Wilton is one of the best names in the cookie, cake, and candy biz — and for good reason. These are an Add-On item, so we suggest adding them to your cart any time you’re spending $25, as you can never have too many. They’re colorful, crunchy, and oh-so festive.

The Best Chocolate Sprinkles

Chocolate Ice Cream Sprinkles, $20 for 15 ounces at Williams Sonoma

Not just your average chocolate sprinkles, this blend features semisweet chocolate sprinkles mixed with rainbow sanding sugar, multicolored mini candies, and pastel sequin wafers. Use it on ice cream, cakes, or fairy bread.

The Best All-Natural, Vegan Sprinkles

Believe it or not, not all sprinkles are vegan or gluten-free. (That’s not to say that none of the ones on this list are, it’s just that you have to read the packaging.) Supernatural’s sprinkles are. They contain no soy, artificial dyes, palm oil, wax, or animal products. We’re partial to this starry blend, but honestly you can’t go wrong with any of their options.

The Best, Most Unicorn-y Sprinkles

Party Sprinkles, $24 for 14 ounces at Uncommon Goods

The unicorn trend shows no sign of slowing down and there are many, many unicorn sprinkle mixes out there. Leave it to Amy Sedaris (and Fishs Eddy) to create our favorite option. This mix includes pastel sugar wafers, colored nonpareils, chocolate drops, and more. Plus, it comes with this cute little wooden scooper!

The Best Bulk Bags for Cheap

Sprinkles, $4 for one pound at Nuts.com

Need a pound of yellow sprinkles on the cheap? Obviously, you do. This site has a few one-pound bags (red, green, yellow, etc.) for just $4 each. Our only complaint is that they don’t have more color options.

The Best Specialty Mixes

Anything at Sweetapolita

The seller behind Sweetapolita is a wizard with colors. She mixes and matches all sorts of sprinkles and candies in order to come up with the most eye-catching color and texture combos you’ve ever seen. We couldn’t even call out our favorite mixes here because there are so many good ones we love. Fine! If we have to, we vote for Worth the Whisk, Monster Mash, and Glam Rock.
