For me, dollar stores are synonymous with my grandma. Aside from flea markets, they were her favorite place to shop. We’d often go to lunch at a nearby diner and then to a dollar store to browse the aisles — and, inevitably, leave with a bagful of items. The contents would vary for the most part, but we’d always pick out a snack or two. (We needed sustenance for our hours-long card game sessions!)

Recently, I visited the Dollar Tree near the town I grew up in — the very same one my grandma and I frequented. Today, the “Snack Zone,” a multi-aisle area of the store contains a mix of sweet, savory, salty, and refrigerated snacks. It’s bigger and better than ever and stocks longtime staples — like my grandma’s beloved Oreos — and newer finds. All of them cost $1.25, unless otherwise marked (and in those cases they were less). These are the 10 worth picking up the next time you visit!

Made with popcorn, sunflower oil, cane sugar, and sea salt, this kettle corn is the ultimate sweet and salty snack. It’s gluten free, non-GMO Project Verified, and vegan. If you like your popped corn on the savory side, I also spotted White Cheddar on the shelf below.

These crispy pea-shaped snacks are made with real peas; they’re the first ingredient! Lightly salted and baked to a satisfying crunch, you’ll want to stash an extra bag or two for afternoons to come.

3. Rudolph’s OnYums Onion Flavored Rings, $1.25 for 3 ounces

While these rings don’t list onion as their first ingredient, or any ingredient (they’re made with onion powder), what they lack in actual onion they more than make up for in flavor. The onion-flavored rings are, dare I say it, pure YUM.

As animal-shaped snacks go, teddy bears are iconic. I especially like that these honey-flavored cookies come in a resealable zipper bag, so you can eat them at your leisure, while ensuring maximum freshness.

5. Frigo Cheese Heads Original String Cheese, $1.25 for 3 ounces

The refrigerated section was sparser than the aisles with chips and cookies. There was, however, plenty of string cheese. This three-pack snack includes individually packaged low-moisture, part-skim mozzarella (my favorite). Pull apart and enjoy!

6. Oh Snap! Pickling Co. Dilly Bites, $1.25 for 3.25 ounces

The other refrigerated stand out: pickles! The Dilly Bites, aside from having an adorable name, are made with fresh, non-GMO cucumbers, vinegar, and salt. There’s no brine added, which means less mess. Basically, the crunchy pickle chips were made for on-the-go snacking.

7. Double Stuf Oreos, $1.25 for 3 ounces

What’s great about these Double Stuf Oreos (aside from them, you know, being grandma-approved!), is that they are pre-packaged into two smaller, snack-size packs. Each one comes with three creme-filled sandwich cookies. So creamy! So ready for travel! And if you want something a smidge bigger, there’s a version with eight cookies.

8. Imperial Nuts Smart Choice Blend, $1.25 for 2 ounces

Imperial Nuts has a whole line of different snack mixes containing dried fruit, nuts, and seeds. This one, a combination of the first two, includes unsalted peanuts, dried sweetened cranberries, unsalted cashews, almonds, and walnuts. And unlike some other nut mixes, it’s sodium-free.

9. Snack Pack Chocolate Vanilla Pudding, $1.25 for 13 ounces

Chocolate meets vanilla in this gluten-free “Snack Pack” — a perfect name for a pudding foursome. The pudding is made with nonfat milk and is also available in other, single flavors, including Vanilla and Butterscotch. All you need is a spoon!

10. Snak Club Tajín Peach Rings, $1.25 for 2.5 ounces

If you like your candied fruit snacks with a little heat, this is the bag for you. Seasoned with Tajín, these peach rings start out sweet and finish with a spicy, chili lime kick. The “Snak Size” pack is pure delight.
