According to Google, This Is the Best Recipe for Homemade Caramel
Often seen as a difficult sauce to master, it’s about time someone demystified the science of making caramel at home. And thanks to Sarah Crawford, we now have a delicious answer.
Originally posted on her blog Broma Bakery back in October 2019, Sarah’s easy peasy caramel recipe has returned, giving her 325,000 followers food for thought on their holiday dessert lineups. The recipe resurfaced on a December 14 Instagram post, and has recently reached the coveted top spot on Google as one of the best homemade caramels around.
The ease of this recipe is what makes it so sweet. Blending just four simple ingredients of sugar, high quality butter, heavy cream (although she notes you can use regular cream), and salt, the concoction becomes sizzling syrupy goodness on the stovetop. Bonus points: there’s no thermometer required, taking the guesswork (and math) out of the equation. But be patient or you’ll get burned. Sarah warns not to take your eyes off the caramel as it’s browning into a perfect orange-brown confection.
Another trick to creating the best caramel, according to Sarah, is salt! “Caramel is simply too sweet without it. A healthy amount of salt really deepens the flavor profile and will keep your caramel from tasting overly sweet,” she writes on her blog.
A versatile addition to an array of dishes, this ooey gooey sweet tooth staple is perfect for topping your favorite desserts, drizzling over ice cream, or just enjoying alone by the spoonful (we won’t tell).
Sarah started her Broma Bakery blog in 2010 as a way to chronicle all of her mother’s favorite dessert recipes online and while this recipe isn’t designated as a family go-to, we’re pretty sure mom would approve.
You can find the full recipe for her homemade caramel here, but if you want even more caramel-centric desserts, this Salted Caramel Apple Pie deserves a try.
