Not to be dramatic or anything, but a good pizza cutter can seriously be life-changing. If you make your own pizza at home, you definitely need a good pizza cutter. (No matter how good your favorite chef’s knife is, it’s never going to cut gooey cheese and chewy crust without mangling everything in its wake.) And even if you tend to stick to take-out from your favorite pizza joint, you almost always need a good tool to finish separating the last little bit of each slice.

So, yes, while we’re usually quick to give a big thumbs down to unitasker tools, we consider a pizza cutter to be a must-have. As long as its a good one — preferably this one.

This pizza wheel from Zyliss is a staff favorite here at Kitchn. It’s also Alton Brown’s go-to, as he told Fast Company, “This one is unique because the handle doesn’t stick out from the side. When you press down, your hand is right over the blade, for better control.”

This wheel is all about leverage; it uses your weight to cut the pizza. It works for thick or thin pizza and right- or left-handed cutters. And the blade is removable for thorough cleaning in the dishwasher.

Of course, other brands make similar models. Staffers also sang the praises of this pizza cutter from OXO. It’ll cost you a few bucks more, but has a slightly better review from Amazon users (4.6 stars versus 4.3 for the Zyliss version).

Don’t want to get either of these? That’s fine. We just strongly suggest a cutter with a handheld design (for better leverage and control). Also, look for one with a stainless steel blade and not a nylon one, as those are not as sharp or effective.
