You never know when snack o’clock will strike. You could find yourself reaching for something to munch on mid-morning, mid-afternoon, or around midnight. (We need sustenance while marathoning the latest Netflix show.) And while you probably have a few regulars in your rotation, there’s always room for a newcomer — or seven. Who doesn’t love a guest star with a three-episode arc?

The best new snacks we tried in 2022 truly satisfied. Our cast of this year’s favorites has something for both sweet and savory fans, including the latest from our friends Ben and Jerry, some top-notch jerky, and cauliflower’s answer to pizza rolls. These are the seven between-meal bites that stood out from the rest.

1. The Granola Factory Toffee Almond Granola Clusters

These buttery, sweet, and salty clusters strike all the right notes with each crumbly, crispity spoonful. The Pennsylvania brand began when its founders served their signature granola to guests of their Bed & Breakfast, The Bethlehem Inn. This year, it’s available to everyone who shops at a Whole Foods or Wegmans. The toasty toffee almond flavor makes this cross between cereal and dessert a deliciously snackable bite.

2. Porter Road Beef Sticks

Beef jerky provides a tasty way to tide you over during a road trip, fast fuel during a hike, and a convenient boost of protein on-the-go. Renowned Nashville butcher shop Porter Road takes this staple snack up a level with these savory sticks. The Sweet Heat and Butcher’s Original varieties both entice with flavorful spices: spicy mango, jalapeño, brown sugar, and red pepper, and classic garlic and peppercorn, respectively. Stash some in your bag for your next adventure or commute home.

3. Kettle Brand Buffalo Bleu Chips

Who hasn’t wanted something to crunch on while watching the World Cup or the first season of Wednesday? A salty potato chip makes a great complement to your favorite event, and Kettle brand has achieved terrific crispiness with a growing library of inventive flavors. With Buffalo Bleu, it’s harnessed the essence of one of the greatest of snack foods: the game-day chicken wing. Tangy and buttery with a hint of spice, blue cheese, and celery, these finger-linking chips really have it all.

4. Field + Farmer Apple Cinnamon Produce in a Bar

Field + Farmer Bars come in fun flavors like Apple Cinnamon, Cocoa Brownie, Carrot Cake, and Peanut Butter & Jelly. These low-sugar snacks satisfy a hankering for something sweet, while smartly sneaking in ingredients like kale, beets, sweet potatoes, and butternut squash. They’re gluten free, sustainably produced, and packed with fruit, nuts, and seeds that will help fill you up between meals.

5. Gordo’s Hot Cheese Dip

If we could bottle some of the best cheese dip, we’d be happy campers. Amazingly for us, Gordo, longtime supplier to local Atlanta restaurants, has done just that. Its hot cheese variety provides a pleasing hint of heat, and a gooey goodness we want draped over our tortilla chips. Grab a container for your next soirée and impress everyone with your excellent taste in queso.

6. Ben & Jerry’s Topped Pints and Cookie Dough Mixes

This year, Ben and Jerry’s generously bestowed many new flavors upon us, including two “Topped” selections and two novelty “Frozen Cookie Dough Mixes.” The Topped pints, Chocolate Milk & Cookies and Dirt Cake, both have a thick layer of chocolate ganache and crumbles piled on, like instant sundaes-in-a-cup. The cookie dough mixes, described as “snackable truffles” come in S’mores and Peanut Butter varieties, and give us a candy crush straight out of the bag. Try adding these little bonbons on top of the Topped pints for an extra-sweet Ben & Jerry’s experience.

7. Veggies Made Great Stuffed Cauliflower Bites

Veggies Made Great takes on the cauliflower crust trend with these pizza-inspired bites, in flavors like Margherita, Spinach & Ricotta, Roasted Veggie & Four Cheese, and Mushroom, Onion, & Swiss. Unsurprisingly, veggies are central in the dough — a blend of cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and spinach is the first ingredient. These scrumptious spheres are sophisticated enough for your next party, but quick enough to heat and serve after work or school.
